symbolic ceremony in Cancun Mexico

Recommended Posts

Hello ladies, I need some advise about getting married where I am from, then going to Mexico to do a symbolic ceremony! I want to know if anyone has done this and if it was a hassle to get married first and then go down there to do a ceremony? Any information would be helpful, I have been planing this for a while and want to have everything planned before booking a resort! Thanks so much and have a wonderful evening :)

Hi RaeRae,

Welcome to BDW! Many brides (including myself) choose to do the symbolic ceremony in Mexico, and do the legal (paperwork) in their hometown.

Where do you live? The legal requirements for marriage differ by countries, and within the US, even by state or county.

Here in TX, it wasn't difficult to do the legal part, just a few steps and time invested. We had to go to the county clerk's office to get our license, book an appointment with a Justice of the Peace to legally marry us, and then return to the clerk's office to file the license/certificate (could have mailed it in, but I needed certified copies anyway for the name change). We did this a couple of weeks before we left for Mexico.

Our wedding in Mexico was the symbolic ceremony, and we wrote it ourselves. the minister was selected by the resort, and he followed our script as requested. We also had a certificate to sign as part of the ceremony, so our guests didn't even realize it wasn't legal. That part was super easy!

Hope that helps.

We will be having a symbolic ceremony in Cozumel and a small legal ceremony here in FL. This works out best for us as close family that is unable to join us in Cozumel can still be included in this ceremony. We are still planning, but I'm thinking we may follow this with a "Bon Voyage" party for everyone else unable to join in Cozumel.

we will do legal a few days before our DW in Mexico.....we debating rather to tell anyone...don't wanna take

the joy from our parents/others if they knew we got married a head of time....   and we debating what date to celebrate

as our Anniv....so if we pick legal date then we will tell them later on...months later....

If we pick DW date...then it won't matter and we never have to tell...

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
