Question about flying with a wedding dress 2013!!

Hey brides! 

 

I wanted to know if anyone has contacted their airlines about carrying on their dress. AirTran told me that I either have to buy a ticket for my dress (crazy!!) or fold it into a carry on bag. 

 

Has anyone else received this info? Not sure what to do -unless I internationally ship the dress to the resort - which makes me super nervous.

We're flying next week, so no personal experience yet.  I'm going to carry my dress on and ask at the gate if I can put it in the first class closet.  Or if they'll even lay it flat in an overhead bin.  From everything I have read, most airlines are very accommodating with this, I'm hoping that's true.  An upgrade to first class would be nice, too .

I was originally flying AirTransit but got switched to a subsidiary CanJet a few months out - I called the airline about a month in advance and had it noted on my file that I was flying with a wedding dress so that ensured I had an overhead bin for exclusive use.  We got to board in advance to place the garmet bag in the overhead bin (no closets on Canjet)  and then a flight attendant was stationed in front of the bin during the boarding process so no one else could open it and try to fit their luggage in with the dress.  I was very pleased with the service!

 

Also the airline made special note of us being Bride and Groom with special stickers on our boarding passes so that at each step of the check-in process at the airport staff were aware we were "VIP" as they say.  Definitely made our process much easier (and faster - all sorts of line skipping happening!)

I'm flying Air Transat and this is the first I have heard of this??

There are no closet facilities on board our aircraft.
The dress may be carried in addition to a regular-sized carry-on bag.

 

 

I have known dozen of brides that have never ran into this issue.. I would go back to them on this.. and point out there policy on the website that clearly states you can take it.

I fly Frontier in November and they made room in an overhead compartment for my dress- my dress was not full or fluffy or anything so I had no issues.  I used my dress as my carry-on along with my purse and a bag that I shoved my purse in in case they said something about me having 3 carry-on bags lol.

Yeah I never really thought about this because I never heard anyone say they couldn't travel with it. I've seen brides before on various airlines all take their dresses on board with them. Definitely go back and talk to them about this.

Thanks for all the insight! I've spoken to two reps who said the same thing - but I'm going to keep trying! Most of the brides I've talked to have had good experiences flying with their dress...I'll stay positive!

I fly AirTran this Wednesday and I have also called ahead and was told that I would either have to squeeze it into a bin and make it match the dimensions or an allowed carry-on, check it in as checked luggage or purchase a seat for it. All of these options seem ridiculous to me. I don't have an enormous dress, it just poofs at the bottom. I'm just bringing it and asking at the gate what they can do for me. I'm hoping the people at the gate will be a little more sympathetic and somehow make it all work out. Good luck with everything!

Possibly a stupid question...but Air Tran and Air Transat are two different airline are they not? Anyone know?

Yes. AirTran and AirTransat are 2 differet airlines. AirTran is based out of the US, Air Transat is based out of Canada
