Help putting together a reception slideshow ***ESP PHOTOGRAPHERS!***

OK, working on putting together our slide show of growing up and pictures since we met. I have a relatively simple question that is confusing me. A lot of my more recent photos are in digital format, but all of the old pictures need to be scanned in.

 

That's no problem, but I'm not sure what dpi and size I should scan them in at. Obviously I want them to be as small as reasonable but don't want to jeopardize clarity on the big screen. I understand dpi, resolution, etc... I'm just not sure what happens to these images once they are projected and what will look good/bad...

 

Anyway, I've digressed... Can someone who has an idea, let me know the settings that I should be using to scan these in?

How cool I have always wanted to do that especially because I have a ton of photos and also would like to include my parents who aren't here anymore.

Hopefully someone will have an answer before I scan several hundred of these pics in!!!

i dont know a thing about scanning etc... pm jonathan. hes a guy and will probably know more techie stuff

I have made a slideshow and I went on the hightest res. possible and I would encourage you to do the same. The pictures of us as kids look "rough" compared to the ones now but you can get the idea behind the picture. The lesser the quality the lesser the detail. In some of the photos I did at lower res. you can just she shadow rather than my eyes.

Highest dpi available to me is 1200 and I can scan them in as 8X10 images. That would make for a resolution of 9600X12000 which is ridiculous. Each picture would take up something like 100 MB or 100 minutes worth of MP3 music.

There has to be a basic standard that is considered high enough quality and will project well when shown in a slideshow...

can you test it somehow? do you have access to a projector to see how it looks?

Nope, won't have the projector until we get down there. Guess I can try to borrow one from a friend here and give it a shot...

Go with the 1200 dpi max. It's likely your slideshow program will convert all the images to a standard resolution for projection. The higher the dpi input the better the quality. The final file size should be the same size regardless of the image inputs. It depends on which program you use. Regardless, you have everything to gain and nothing to lose (except disc space) if you go with the max.

the 1200 dpi is your final output, ie for exapmple wallpaper on your computer is ( mine is 1290x1024) pixels the same thing goes for when your scanning you need to know what your final output is. When i was in school, when i woudl get scans done of my prints average file was 100 mg, quite large, what i woudl do is match the scans to what you have digital right now, and in fact your better off paying someone in yoru are locally to do this and put them all on dvd- When you scan if you dont do it right your goign to have dust spots and it will start looking crappy unless you know photoshop well. Do a search and see if it can be done local if not go to the net, i am sure you can outsource this type of work.
