Destination wedding-where to start?

Hi all,

I'm new! My fiance and I are planning a small 2009 destination wedding and are thinking Caribbean. Any advice on where to start??

One thing I'm interested in finding out is whether you are having the wedding at a larger resort or taking up most of a smaller place. Our group will be small so it might be nice to have everyone in a more intimate setting, but on the other hand it might be better at a larger resort with more activities where the guests can interact with people outside our group.

Thanks.

Congrats everyone!!

Congrats and welcome to the forum!! We chose Cancun because it's relatively cheap to fly to and guests from both sides of the country can get a direct flight there. We also went with a big resort but we are expecting about 140, so I don't think a small place could have accommodated us...particularly because we are renting out space for both a Welcome Dinner and the Reception.

Welcome! Look through several of the sub categories on this forum for the locations in the Caribbean... then you will see threads that have locations/ resorts added. Our host gathered a lot of info and placed it together.

I took some of that and then looked on tripadvisor.com to look at the 'candid travel photos' of each resort that we liked.

Do some searches on the forum for specifics and we are here to help.

Happy planning!

Hi and welcome to the forum!

After becoming engaged, the first thing that I did was decide on a location and accommodations. Once that part is done, the rest will seem easy! That being said, I think that the size of the resort is up to your own personal preference. It was very important to us to have a private, intimate wedding, so, we ended up renting out a smaller place that could accommodate all of our guests.

Let us know what we can do to help you in the planning process!

Welcome to the forum! Definitely sift through this forum some more on the specific location threads to get some more info to base your decision on. I'm sure that after a good week or so of research, you'll have a better idea of which island/country for sure and you'll be on your way. Happy Planning!

welcome3.gif to the forum! I agree with what everyone else said...look around at the info posted here and get a better idea of what country you may want. About the size of the resort... I picked a larger resort, so there would be more restaurants and bars for my guests. Also, because I don't know if I want to be running into my FI's mom and family 24/7 (lol!). I also think small and intimate would be cool, but it's your personal preference.

Hey!! Congrats!!

I was just married in Mexico at a small resort of 350 rooms.

It was perfect!!!

The resort was huge and beautiful but small enough that all of the staff knew who we were and who we were with!!!

It made for a very special time and everyone was really catered to!

They also do not do more than one wedding a day, make sure you look into this!!! ....If it's important to you!!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
