What is the difference between legal (civil), religious and symbolic ceremonies?

Only a civil ceremony is legally recognized. A religious ceremony has no legal bearing and does not replace in any way the binding legal civil marriage. A renewal of vows or religious ceremony is a symbolic ceremony. It is performed by a non-denominational minister. (Please note that Catholic ceremonies cannot be performed outside the church). The bride and groom will receive a symbolic marriage which is not legally.

So basically everyone here is right including your TA. They are the Same thing, but I would still figure you could get a wedding package with food and ect...

Hey Tulumbride2013 :) Yep, I saw that on the website myself, but appreciate you looking that up for me :))) ... I've been looking at the website every other day before we finally made our decision to go for Now Jade :)

I think with me, its the fact that it is called a 'renewal of vows' on our invoice, rather then a 'Symbolic Ceremony'.... And the fact that the TA in the UK has said we cant have a wedding package as we will be already married. All along, the TA in Ireland has been saying we can have the non-denominational/symbolic wedding ceremony, after we have our civil wedding at home, to save on expenses, translations etc...

This is also from the Now Jade website brochure.

W E D D I N G C E R E M O N I E S

SYMBOLIC OR NON DENOMINATIONAL

This ceremony focuses on love, marriage, family and society.

Mexican law does not consider this ceremony legally valid. No

documentation or blood tests are required.

CIVIL OR LEGAL CEREMONY

This ceremony is performed by a judge and focuses on family

and respect for the couple. A list of requirements must be met in

order to be legally married under Mexican law.

It is only going to be myself & fiance going over, so we just wanted what we thought we were going to get:-

Your Moments Wedding Package $949 or Complimentary (minimum 7 night stay or 5 rooms booked for a minimum 3 night required)

  • Services of a judge or minister
  • Choice of wedding ceremony location
  • Bouquet for the bride
  • Boutonniere for the groom
  • Dedicated wedding coordinator
  • Preparation of the brideâ€s gown and groomâ€s tuxedo/suit
  • Wedding cake
  • Sparkling wine toast
  • Romantic turndown services that evening: rose petal drawn Jacuzzi bath, bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries
  • Late check-out for the bride and groom (upon request)
  • 20% off spa treatments

I know its not a huge difference, but still...

Soul Mates Vow Renewal Package

2012/2013 Selling Price: $499 USD

This romantic package includes:

  • Service of a dedicated on-site wedding coordinator
  • Renewal of Vows Ceremony
  • Corsage
  • Boutonniere
  • Sparkling wine toast for two
  • Certificate of Renewed Vows
  • Special dining arrangements for two the evening of the ceremony
  • Romantic turn-down service
  • Honeymoon & Anniversary package

This package is complimentary when booking the Preferred Club Ocean View or higher for a minimum 5-night stay.

I don't get a bouquet, we have to pay additional charges for getting our wedding clothes prepared & the wedding co-ordinator performs the ceremony... Is that who they consider a non-denominational minister?? And all along our quotes included these things..

I want Mexico, to be our wedding day, not the day we renewed our vows :(

it really should be called a symbolic ceremony but sometimes is interchangeable with vow renewals.  Typically vow renewals are done as sort of an anniversary to re-commit husband and wife again...they re-do their vows but I guess the term could be used if you have a ceremony 5 days after your legal ceremony.

i think some people substitute the terms (especially TA or resort event coordinators) because they usually entail the same thing (no legal docs, judge, legal filings, etc.)

Yep, I guess you're right Tammy :) I got it all sorted now anyway, thanks :) We are now booked for the 'Your Moments Wedding Package', as per quote, rather than Renewal of Vows as per invoice. :)

I was a little concerned as to what was included in the ceremony itself, as in readings, vows, exchange of rings etc... but there were also things included in the wedding package that we would have had to pay additionally for if we had been mistakenly booked for the vow renewal.

But its all good. Bring on May 6th 2013 :))) â¥

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
