Hi there :)

We are planning to have a civil ceremony here at home in Ireland and had then planned on a Symbolic ceremony on the beach in Mexico... But I just want to know what is the difference between vow renewal ceremony and symbolic ceremony?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Susannah,

We had a civil ceremony in Colorado and then had a symbolic ceremony (but didn't tell anyone it wasn't the real thing!) in Mexico, shortly after we moved here.

I think a vow renewal is what you do after five, ten or twenty years of marriage to celebrate your life together.

With the symbolic ceremony we asked a close friend to officiate and read the vows that we had written for each other. It worked for us!

Good luck,

Michael

Thank you Michael for your reply. I was only looking at your website & blog today. Your photos are beautiful and congrats on your recent wedding :) I'm a photographer myself, so I love scrolling through others images :) We actually got a quote for the basic wedding package (which is perfect for us as its only the 2of us going over) included so we ended up putting a deposit on it but when we got the confirmation invoice yesterday, it said it was the renewal of vows package! I got back onto the travel agent and she said its just a different name for a symbolic blessing/ceremony, but I have my doubts. :-/ Thanks again Michael for getting in touch.

Hey Michael,

What do you think of this?? I have been dealing with a travel agent in Ireland for the last few months, and all along, she has being quoting us for 'The Moments that Matter Wedding Package' and then when we got the confirmation invoice from the UK, it says its for the Renewal of Vows Package. I have just queried that with the UK Travel Agent, and she said "as you will already be married you cannot have the wedding package, you will have the Renewal of Vows package. The ceremony is similar and it is the hotelâ€s wedding co-ordinator who performs the Renewal as it is not a legal ceremony"

I have read so many reviews on here of people who had their civil wedding at home, then had a symbolic blessing in Mexico. I want our day on the beach to feel like our wedding day...

Hi Susannah,

It seems you are getting locked into "packages" and their labels. I did see one bride advise you to deal directly with the WC at the resort. That might give you a more personal response.

I suppose what is most important now is what the resort is going to include in your package. At the very least, the price should be lower, since they seem to figure in $300 or so for the priest or preacher for an official ceremony.

Are you happy with the resort otherwise? Can you change resorts or dates? My guess is that they are not going to be as responsive to you as they will to the bride who is booking 10 - 20 rooms with her wedding party. Just simple economics.

If you are not already confirmed, there are a lot of boutique, smaller, more personal places for your ceremony like La Reve or Al Cielo.

Thanks for the compliments on our photos. We love what we do!

Best of luck. We are not on here everyday, so send us a PM if you need any further advice.

Hey Michael,

Thanks again for your response. Its not that I am getting locked into package titles, its more that I thought we were getting something, which we booked, only for the confirmation invoice to say we are getting something less. I just want our day to be special and a wedding coordinator performing the ceremony, just doesn't feel right. It feels like, as you say, we are not bringing in guests etc, and therefore are not as important. But its supposed to be the most important day in our lives!

We have already paid a deposit to the travel agent based on the 'wedding package'. Anyway, as was suggested to me, I have emailed the WC.

Take care & keep shooting :)

Hi Susannah,

I'm planning my vow renewal for April 2013. Eight years ago I had a civil ceremony too with the plans of having a "My Planned Wedding". I understand what you mean when you feel your renewal being not important to other. Me and my husband will only have the close friends and family attend the beach ceremony. I'm here if you have questions :)

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
