Inexpensive "Here comes the bride" sign DIY

Hi Ladies,

 

Well I completed another DIY project this weekend and thought I'd share!  I wanted one of those "Here comes the bride/Happily ever after" signs, but by the time I got it double sided and paid for shipping it was about $40 and that seemed like a lot for something I could make myself so I thought I'd give it a go!  I think it turned out pretty well and only cost me about $5!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

For the board, I just went to my local Rona (hardware store) and they usually have an area where they keep odd ends from cuts made with the table saw.  This piece of MDF was about the right size and priced at $0.50 - perfect!  I then picked up a sample can of paint from Home Depot (you know the $5 sample cans?), one of the ones that is primer and paint together, in an ivory shade.  

 

For the lettering, I played around with different fonts in Word until I found one I liked (kinda liked the idea of somewhat child-like writing because my two little nieces will be carrying it).  Found a great tip from another website (can't remember which - sorry!), but I printed out the text and then rubbed over the backside of the paper with a pencil, around the letters to make my own kind of carbon copy paper.  You then lay the text over the sign, trace out the letters and the graphite is transferred onto the sign so you have a guideline - genius!  I outlined the letters with a black sharpie so that I didn't have to be so exact with the paint edges, and then filled it in with a black metallic coloured paint.  And I'm pretty happy with the results!

 

Oh, I also screwed in a couple of eye hooks to the top so that I can attach a ribbon.  And that's pretty much it!  Hope someone else finds that helpful!

Great job, Mimiq and thanks for sharing! I too was looking to purchase one of these signs but decided not to in the end not to. But after seeing this, I'm going to attempt to do it myself! May I ask what fonts you had used? Also, was the paint dried or slightly damp when you transferred the letters to the board?

Thanks Blujaye!  So glad my post helped someone!  It's definitely easy to do yourself and I'm not really super crafty, just kinda crafty .  Mine may not have the perfectly crisp edges of vinyl letters (although you can buy just vinyl letters on etsy too), but I like that when I look at it, I know that I made it!

 

The fonts I used were all free (not sure which website I got them from though, but should be easy to find them I think!).  The font for "Here comes the bride" was called Joyful Juliana, for "and they lived" was Andalus, and "happily ever after" was Scriptina.

 

I definitely made sure that the paint was dried when I transferred the letters to the board.  I wasn't sure if my homemade carbon copy trick would work, but it totally did!

Thanks and I'll have to search the "Joyful Juliana" font on dafont.com. I'm going to attempt this project this week I'll let you know how it turns out and will for sure ask you more questions if I get stuck.
