How to get all the OOT stuff to your destination?

Recommended Posts

I'm getting close to the BIG day and I have been holding off to buy my OOT stuff till I get my final number. I am thinking about how am I gonna get all this stuff down to Mexico. My Sister had a heck of a time in the past shipping her stuff to Mexico and I am wondering what other people are doing to get there "goodies" down to their destination.

We are checking 2 bags full of wedding stuff - decorations, OOT bags, etc. I also have a friend who's willing to check a bag for us (they get 2 free checked bags), and my parents too (we'll pay for their extra bag), so a total of 4 extra pieces of luggage. If we have more crap than that to haul down there, then we will just have to cut back.

Do you have any friends or family who can check an extra bag and help you out?

I highly advise you NOT to ship. I have heard so many horror stories of contents getting stuff in customs and not even arriving for the wedding. I highly advise you to arrange your items in boxes or plastic tubs, making sure each one is not over 50lbs nor $300 value. AND KEEP THE CORRESPONDING RECEIPT WITH THE BOX OR TUB. United Airlines charges $40 for an extra bag . . so we plan to package everything up as I just explained, and then for each box or tub give it to a bridal party member or family member with the $40 cash to bring down to the resort. Seems like the esiest way. Best to create a spreadsheet of what is in what box and label them and who has what. Good luck.

We were able to put all our stuff in suitcases.  I put some in my suitcase, lots in my hubbys suitcase, and a few items in family members suitcases that had extra room.

  • 4 weeks later...

As it getting closer to my big day, I keep contemplating (and even rearranging) my luggage. I am already up to 3 very large suitcases full of wedding stuff, I medium sized and I small. I will be giving the medium sized to my friend as she said she will check it in for me. We will have a hanging luggage for the hanging and dressier items and we have purchased an oversized duffle bag to put all our clothes and shoes in. When we come back, some of the suitcases that had all the OOT bag stuff in it will be empty so we can transport the duffle bag back in one of those suitcases.

Since I will be workin on projects when I get there, I will be putting an itemized list in each suitcase so I know what's in each suitcase (also to act as sort of a checklist too, so I am not forgetting anything)

Great thread ladies!.. I too was wondering how I would get everything to my destination.. shipping is out of the question for me since I too have heard horror stories of items not arriving..

I'm hoping to pack lightly for my clothes (fingers crossed this works, I always want to pack my whole closet)  FI is a light packer, so maybe he can fit most of his clothes in a carry on so I can have a lot of room in his checked bag. Also, remember ladies can have a purse + carry on and guys can get away with a laptop bag + a carry on. Or at least this is what I have been told. :o) Most of my family doesn't even think of taking a carry on... So maybe they will carry wedding decor items for us. :o) But I'm really hoping to keep the decor and goodies to a minimum.

What about raffia fans??.. the box mine came in was huge!.. I'm wondering if they will take up a whole suitcase on their own.. :-/

My wedding is in Hawaii and I've been worrying about this too. Does anyone know if it's safer to ship things to Hawaii or should we just go ahead and pay for the extra baggage handling with our flight? I'm having a hard time finding anything on Hawaii weddings (At least on the big island).

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
