Anyone have a not so "magical" proposal?

Recommended Posts

I always told my FI that I never wanted to be engaged on a holiday either. He doesn't listen ;-) Case and point, we were engaged on Christmas Day 2013.

Michael and I had been living together for about 4 months (dating for 6 yrs) so I was all excited for Christmas since it was the first Christmas in our new house so I went overboard on decorations, the tree, and his presents. On Christmas morning when it was time to unwrap he unwrapped all of his presents and I didn't have one from him.... not that I need anything for Christmas, but still he didn't get me anything for Christmas, no card, no explanation. I was furious. We had plans to visit my family for lunch and his family for dinner so we were off and running to get ready...(and me not talking to him). We got to my parents and he did what he always does, goes to the shop to hang out with the guys while they cook. I went inside and my mom could tell I was upset, well my dad didn't get her anything either, so we were in a great mood for Christmas, ha. We got through my side's christmas and gifts and said our good byes and headed to his parents for dinner. The first thing his mom does was ask what I got for Christmas...and I just smiled and said ask Michael. She of course laid into him and we laughed about it. We get through their presents and food and we were both exhausted so we head for home. I had just laid down on the couch and was ready to watch a christmas movie when he asked if I had a good Christmas. I replied with a yeah it was ok, how was yours...and he said well I can make yours better and he gave me a christmas box, so I opened it and there were tons of M&M's in it. I just laughed and started eating them when he said to look at them, well each M&M said "Michael and Caitlin"  "I love you" and "Will you marry me" I screamed and literally said What the helll..... he brings over my Christmas stocking and my ring was in there.....Yes, in there the entire day and I didn't check it, so of course I had to call everyone and tell them, which they all ready knew since he asked my dad before..... so I felt like a big jerk for acting like a spoiled brat only to find out he did have something for me, the best gift I ever could have gotten!

Aww that’s sweet and hilarious all at the same time!

I’m loving these stories, I actually wanted a super non-magical proposal (because I’m the opposite of romantic/sentimental) but my FH did something really special for me instead.

I love reading about all these not so "magical" proposals, they're each perfect in their own special way!

I'm pretty low key, so I never wanted a big ordeal of a proposal. My Fl carried the ring around for over a month trying to plan the perfect moment until became apparent that he wouldn't have the chance to do it for almost another month due to our conflicting schedules. We were fishing for pike (we are hard core fly Fisher-people, that's how we met), me standing in the boat behind him, it started to rain so he asked me to grab his rain coat from under my seat. I started to throw it over his shoulders and he says "no, there's a box in the pocket, can you grab it for me?" I assume he's got a box of flies, but as soon as I felt the box I knew what it was. Immediately I said "what the f**k is this?" Without even turning around, he says "you know what the f**k that is..." LOL! He asked if I'd marry him, but I felt the need to bring my daughter into the conversation, she was in the front of the boat and completely oblivious as to what had just happened. I filled her in and asked what she thought.... She replied "let me think about it....." After what seemed like an eternity, she declared "you can marry him only if he promises to kill all the spiders, forever" haha! I couldn't imagine a more perfect scenario!

I love everyone’s stories!!

Engagement and getting married had already been discussed because for us to be together I must apply for a fiancé visa to move to the U.S. I had already told him that I wanted to be surprised, and no cliché like a ring in a champagne glass, and had described aspects of a ring I would like.

When I was visiting for a week early July, he got really serious and told me that he knew the type of ring I wanted but it would mean a lot to him and his family that IF and WHEN he proposed he would do so with a ring his mother that has just passed in November left for him to give to the woman he chose to marry. I was obviously very emotional about it, and thought he would probably do it next time we were in Florida, where the ring was. He also added that the ring would be too small, because his mother was very petite, but that it had a pearl with 7 or 8 diamonds and that it was beautiful.

Anyways the week went on, and this completely slipped my mind. We stayed at a hotel one night and had gone out for a few drinks. We were sitting on the bed just cuddling, my head was on his shoulder and were talking about random stuff. And then he said ‘’well honey how would you like to have 8 diamonds on your finger?’’ I looked up and he was holding the ring, my very lady like reaction was :o  WTF?!? Lol. I took the ring from him amazed, just looking at it. I couldn’t believe he had fooled me. I handed it it back to him and said ‘’Do it again!’’ and then he said the most beautiful things about how he never thought he would love someone so much and that his mother wouldn't want it any other way.

It was simple and beautiful and so us. Just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
