The Term "Hubby"

Recommended Posts

I know I probably will sound really mean for saying this, but...I think nothing irks me more than girls that call their boyfriends "hubby", when they're not married at all.  I've seen a grown trend in this, especially on social networking sites where they'll refer to him as their "hubby"...like not even HUSBAND, but "hubby".  Everytime I see it I want to reply back to their post and call them out on it and be like, "You aren't married, you're not even engaged, and you don't live together so he's not even your common law husband, he's your BOYFRIEND".   lol..Of course I've never done it or ever would actually say that to them.  And I probably sound like I'm being a snob now because I'm engaged and will actually have a husband soon, but I've always hated that, long before I was engaged.

Does anybody else feel that way?

Oh wait it gets worse.  I actually don't even like the term hubby, even if you are married.  I mean, to each his own. I totally get that its a cute term of endearment and is used when you're actually married.  But I don't think I could ever refer to my husband as "hubby". haha I feel silly even saying it.

I've also noticed some of my friends, close friends mind you, will refer to their husband in conversation with me as "husband".  Like, as if I don't know who their husband is, I've only been calling him by his name for 10 years!  And you've always referred to him by his name, now you're always referring to him as "husband"?  Example, "Well, my husband (pronounced with an emphasis) and I went out to dinner last night, blah blah blah".  Everytime it happens I laugh and call them out on it.  What the heck is this?  Do chicks feel like they need to remind everyone they're married now?  Yes....I know, he's your husband.  I was at your wedding.  I didn't suddenly forget what your relationship status is.  haha it cracks me up each time!  I totally get referring to him as your husband if its someone who you dont know, or are introducing him to someone, etc.  But really? C'mon!  Stop the madness.  lol!

Hahahaha I'm so guilty of this, I refer to my FI as hubby all the time! I think part of this is because we're both in our 30's and we do live common-law. I feel childish referring to him as my BF and I actually can't stand the term FI. I find alot of women when referring to their FI do so in a very snobbish way... it erks me! No offense to those that say FI (all the time).

This is hilarious, and I fell the exact same way about all of it. This kid I work with always calls his wife, "my wife," like I haven't met LAUREN 500 times. She has a name and an identity, dammit! I always call him out on it and he laughs, he knows its just a habit he's gotten into :D

It took me forever to get used to calling him fiance. I dont think I was even used to it when we got married. I always said it with a french accent - accidentally to people I didn't know a few times too! LOL maybe you'll like this article: http://offbeatbride.com/2011/04/the-f-word

That article was cute, I think for me I just have issues with using people's names! I can use first names for calling out to people to get their attention, but when talking about someone I always use general terms for them ie. "my sister," "my brother," even my son (Chase) whom I generally refer to as "my kid." I never even use his name and I gave it him! LOL!!!

I hear you on this one as well. I know that for me I made a point not to call my FI anything but my BF until we were actually engaged....and when he would refer to me as his wife I would call him on it....Even though we have been living together for 5 years and have a 3.5 year old DD I still wasn't ok with it unless it was real.

Now that we are engaged officially and to be married I find I don't really like the term Fiance so I am playing around with other ones but it doesn't really come up that much. I usually just say his name!

Just to be different - I love the saying hubby! It's affectionate and fun. I do call him my husband sometimes (even though we're not married yet) just because it's easier. I did that before we were even engaged, travelling europe, it was jus easier to say I was travelling with my husband. May have even used his last name to book us into a castle we stayed at in Ireland...

As for close friends using the term husband...SUPER big pet peeve! If someone knows your husband, just use his name!! It's not that hard!

Good thread. :) Sorry to oppose!

I guess I am in the same boat as not minding the word. My fiance and I have been together for 10 years, and lived together for 7. So we actually "demoted" each other when we got engaged, from husband and wife, to fiance/e. It's hilarious. We just used whatever word came to us in the moment, if we needed too. I often wondered why he would refer to me as "wifey" or "my girl" so often to people who have known us for years and know both of us very well. It's not something I tend to do, once people know who we are and can identify us by name. I guess to each their own!

Not sure what I will call him when we actually do get married- only time will tell!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
