Dress Shopping Help

Recommended Posts

What do you wear? I'm going next week but I'm freaking out and wondering if I should purchase some spanx, new strapless bra, and butt shapers! I know I'm going to lose weight before the dress comes back, whatever dress I find. But I'm at a loss as to how to dress to go dress shopping. HELP a clueless former tomboy!

I am no expert but I wore a nude strapless bra and a pair of white boy short underwear... I wasn't sure of what the change room style would be and in case anyone didn't want to see my butt I thought I better cover it! lol!

The dresses weren't my size and needed to be clipped and pinned tighter on me so I had lots of material to cover me up, but the opposite may be the case if the dresses on display were smaller.

The store I almost bought my dress from told me they always order a bigger one than you need so that it can be altered later, so losing weight wasn't an issue as I had to have the dress altered either way.  I ended up buying one that was made for me so hopefully my alteration bill will now be minimal!

Good luck with the dress hunt and have FUN!

Light colored undies, full coverage for sure. If you have a strapless bra, you can take it, and if it's longline, even better. But the bra isn't required if you're going for corset-back dresses (the dresses are going to hold you up plenty).

The corset backs have an added advantage of giving you room to lose weight without needing major alterations. For instance, I can go down 2 dress sizes (20 lbs) with mine before we'd need to make additional alterations.

Thanks ladies! I like the boy shorts undies, they are my faves so I will wear my white ones as well. As for a strapless I will just have it in my bag. I am a little nervous about the whole fitting room thing so I also have an appointment next week for a bikini wax! I'm overdue for one, so what better excuse! (hope that wasn't TMI)  I hope it's fun, I'm just so bummed about my weight and my seemingly jiggly arms so I feel like I need to look better before trying on dresses, but that's just me being silly I know.

Anyway, thanks again for the advice it has helped calm my nerves.

You make me laugh! just remember, the ladies in the dress shops have seen it all before.

Don't be self conscious either. Even the thinnest girls can be critical and not happy with their bodies (and I'm certainly NOT in that club!). There are dresses out there to flatter every figure. And I have a feeling you will rock this!!!!

When I went shopping I wore a white strapless bra and white undies (full coverage). I went to two places. One had a curtain around me that I could change, but was in the room with the people I brought with me..Though, the consultant was very careful and would make sure I was covered before clipping me into the dresses.

The second place had my own private dressing room so I would get into the dress as best I could and then they would clip me in.. They didn't see me in my undies at all .. just my back when clipping me in.

i think strapless or those nude bra, so you won't look awkward when trying low cut dresses. if this is your first time, just wear anything you feel comfortable, then when you choose the styles you like, you can wear a more appropriate bra next time

I think it depends on what type of underwear you normally wear. I'm a thong girl and I was glad I was wearing them when I went to try on dresses because I found a gorgeous dress that looked great on me until I turned around and saw my butt in the mirror. I had butt cellulite everywhere!!! I may not have noticed if I was wearing full coverage undies. So thank god I didn't make a huge mistake with that dress!

Ladies,

I am happy to report that I "Said Yes to the Dress" and found my dress at the first shop! I didn't flash or scare my consultant away and I had a blast! I wore my boy shorts underwear and she actually changed me into a different strapless bra/spanx/body shaper thingy without ever having me flash her! She was skilled because all I knew was that she was telling me to remove my bra from the front but the thingy was on me already! One of my bridesmaids was in the room with me and she was super impressed as well!

It was definitely an experience and I am glad I did it. The designer of my dress was in the salon that day as well for a trunk show so I got my dress, a picture with the designer, and a sale/discount all in one! I'm very happy and can't wait to post the photos. I can't right now though because my fiancee could google me and find the pictures somehow so it will have to be a secret until my planning thread.

Thanks sooooooo much for the dressing room advice!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
