To those born 1920-1979

I thought you guys would get a kick out of this email I got:

************************************************** *************

To all the kids who survived the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank Kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because, WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms.......

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever! The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them, CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good .

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

I KNOW!!! I think that's why I'm so not the type to freak out over the latest "Don't do this!" hype because I'm like, well I did all that and so did my friends and we made it. And I didn't go that crazy with staying away from all the stuff on the "do not eat/do this" pregnancy list because I thought "Well my mom did all this and I'm pretty normal!!" (Not the smoking/drinking stuff, but other things.)

It's funny, the other day my mom says to me "Oh, when the baby sleeps, you have to put him on his tummy so he won't choke if he spits up." Makes sense, but hmmm, I think I'll try the tummy up method...

I *think* that's how I'll be too. I was recently at a family gathering and telling my aunts how I'm taking prenatal vitamins just in case, and they thought it was cute but a little silly...lol They were all "your grandmother never took a vitamin a day in her life and drank homemade wine while pregnant, all of her kids were healthy".

Maybe nowadays the focus is on doing as many good things as possible to counteract all the unhealthy habits we have? Maybe it's genetics? I just know that I've seen people who take the vitamins and avoid the cheeses and whatnot have children born with health issues, and I've seen people with alcohol/drug problems have babies born without them (and vice versa of course). Who knows . . . but we all came from people who were without the benefit of "modern" medicine. Most of us aren't defective...lol

i got this email too the other day ... and couldn't agree more! people are germ, safety, and lawsuit nuts - kids just can't be kids these days!

as for the baby on their back thing - i'm no doctor, but i know that so many babies are developing their arm and neck musckes so much slower now since they're never on their tummies!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
