Getting dress on plane?

Hey all! I'm getting married in November in Mexico - just curious...we are flying delta- do I have to contact them in advance in order for them to hang up my dress upfront? I know I've seen this done whenever we fly out of town, just looking for previous experiences and how far in advance one needs to set this up. Thanks:)

I would call them just to see what they usually do!  they'll probably let you know what their protocol is for that...maybe you dont even have to call in advance adn let them know you're coming

A lot of people on here just asked when they got on the plane.  Some dresses ended up in the overhead laying down on top  of suitcases because it was too long for the cabinet.

I was just thinking the same thing! I should call my airline about my dress! Yikes!

We went for a friend's wedding last year to Mexico, and Transat had a special compartment that was labeled "Bridal Gowns ONLY"... but there were also four brides on that flight. I think all 4 dresses fit comfortably in that bin, and my friend didnt have any wrinkles to steam out when she arrived at the hotel (her dress was chiffon).

We will be flying with AirCanada, and my FI and I went to a DW seminar hosted by AC Vacations, and they assured us that their destination airlines have a compartment reserved for bridal gowns.

We flew Transat and I was able to carry on my dress.  They didnt have any closet to hang it up, however they reserved an overhead bin specifically just for my dress so that things wouldnt be put on top of it.  It only had a few small wrinkles that a steam for the shower fixed.

I've been worried about this too as some airlines do not have a hanging closet. I'm flying with AirTran on a direct flight and I'm pretty sure they do not have a hanging closet. I might need to wrap mine and have it steamed at the resort.

We just flew AirTrain from Baltimore direct flight to Cancun. The flight crew we had was completely unhelpful when it came to my dress

 

All planes have at least a captain's closet, which if they dont want to offer that up, fine, but one stewardess actually try to cram my dress into an overhead bin approx. 1 foot wide.

 

I suggest asking the gate attendant if you can board early since you are carrying on your wedding dress. I did this in case I needed to use an overhead bin, which I did. I ended up folding my dress in half and then putting my carry-on bag/purse next to it so that no one else would use the bin and squish my dress. The stewardess that practically took my dress out of my hand to shove in the tiny bin kept saying that I was going to take other customer's overhead space. I said "well my fiance will forgo his overhead space." and promptly sat down.

 

I did get my dress steamed once I got down there (cost about $30), but it really wasnt too wrinkly. I think it just depends on the style and fabric of your dress.

I'm flying with AirTran from Baltimore direct flight to Cancun as well. And I'm expecting no closet for my dress. It sucks that they don't provide enough space for it knowing they are flying into Cancun, one of the top destination wedding places. What kind of material was your dress? Mine is organza, and I will have it steamed here before we go, and then steamed (touched up) at the resort. A friend of mine was flying recently for her wedding in Key West and she wrapped her dress and steamed it herself once they got to their destination. I have no idea what I'm going to do, specially if AirTran is going to be no help.
