Best Dress Style for Full Figures?

Recommended Posts

Christa- I forgot how gorgeous your dress is! You looks sooo beautiful and teeny-tiny! Kash, I bet this style would work well for you. I tried this type of dress with the pick-ups and I am sadly just too short for this kind of dress. It looked like the dress was wearing me, not me wearing a dress!

Thanks! I ordered it thru Trudy's Brides at the Pruneyard in Campbell. I did a lot of online browsing prior to trying anything on, and this was the one I fell in love with. However, I knew I shouldn't be tied to it because it may not have looked good on. Well, Trudy's was one of the few salons that carry Alfred Sung, so I went there. I tired this one on as well as about 5 or 6 others, including a few Pronovias. This one just made me feel super. And I love the color - its more of a warm champagne color. I learned white white looks HORENDOUS on me!

I'm I'll chime in.. V-neck are great for people that have broad shoulders. I also think an a-line would look best. HOWEVER, I will say this, all my weight goes to my wonderful (thanks Mom) thighs. I was orginally trying on dresses that were A-line, but none felt "great" on. Then I tried on a dress out of my comfort zone and that's the dress I fell in love with. It's hard to say what you will look best in because your avatar picture makes you look really thin. So my advise is first go to a dress shop and try on every style of dress, once you do that you'll start to notice the cut that make you "feel" the best. Then start looking for that stye.

I know I want to shed a 5-10 pounds and add tone to my body as well, It's amazing how much better I feel about myself when I'm toned up. Speaking of which has anyone used body suppliments to help "tone" your body? It's suppose to be used with diet and excercise.

I've used CLA and ALA (fatty acids) to help with fat burning and decrease fat absorption, is that what you're referring to? Or are there other supplements to tone? I'm extremely naive when it comes to supplements for dieting...

I'm thinking about Hydrosecut (? spelling)

Also, I never use to be a coffee drinker and now I have to have my coffee evey morning.. I also used to be so good about what I ate, if I had cake I made someone split it with me, no bread with pasta, that sort of thing and now because my FI eats like crap I'm taking over his bad eating habits. It's so hard to displine yourself when the people around you are eating it. I think I need to try to start drinking more water again.

Tell me about it! And my FI is trying to put on weight (soooo not fair) - so he's eating all the time!

When I was trying on dresses I told the woman I may lose weight, so I needed to make sure they can do the alterations. She said, "well, if you're sure, we can just order the smaller size." Hmmm ... I'm not THAT sure! :)

omg don't EVER do that! For my first wedding, I got talked into buying the smaller size since I planned to lose 5lbs and I almost fit into it. Now, mind you at the time I was teeny tiny and that meant buying a 2 instead of a 4- oh how I long for those days! Anyway, I spent the next 8 months freaking out about fitting into my dress and didn't lose the weight, the dress had to be let out. Just buy the bigger dress and have it altered down- way less stress on yourself!

EXACTLY! I definitely won't do it - I just thought it was funny, and really gave me a reality check on how serious I am about losing any weight! I really do want to "trim and tone" though more than anything. Just a matter of making it to the gym ... <sigh>

And Sarah - you are certainly no whale (but maybe you're as crazy as one for thinking you are wink.gif)

Seriously - have tried on some white/ivory dresses and I have to say there is nothing more unflattering on me! To be honest it's not that I'm huge - it's just that I have a thick waist (basically NO waist!) and it seems like every dress I try on seems to emphasize that fact (instead of reduce it)
I feel your pain. When I went to try on dresses, nothing could be zipped up all the way and I felt huge. I thought the mermaid (or tight bodice dresses) were awful on me. I too normally gravitate towards empire waist dresses. I was determined to go with a halter or strapless. Strapless actually ended up feeling more comfortable (also remember how many times you'll be reaching up to hug people and dance on your wedding day) and drew less attention to my arms. I found the corset back on mine to be really good for cinching in and giving me the appearance of a waist (my mid-section is my most hated body part). The v detailing on my bodice and a-line cut also gave the illusion of a smaller waist. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Tammy - Maybe you're right - I might need to just go in there and try on every dress they have and figure out what works! Strapless is sounding less and less scary! BTW - Thank you for saying I look thin in my picture wink.gif

MariaElena - You looked so beautiful and thin it's hard for me to imagine you dont' have a waist (and trust me I can relate on the "most hated body part!")! I will have to try on a corsett top with the V detailing and A-Line. It sounds like we may have the same probelm! definitely very helpful advice!
