SECRETS MAROMA BEACH ** help **

Recommended Posts

hello ladies!!

i'm new to this and have thankfully found so many answers just by searching the site, but there are a couple questions that i can not seem to find answers for.  i am getting married at secrets maroma beach on july 14, 2012.  my coordinator is valeria, and as i've read, she has been very hit or miss throughout this 2 year process.  actually more miss now that we're getting closer and closer, which is very frustrating.

wondering if any of you bride to be's or married mrs. can help me answer some of my last few questions :

if any of you got married in mid july... how was the weather??  showers?  was the heat bearable?

any of you know when the sun will set?  valeria keeps telling me between 5-6, but whenever i look it up online it says 7:30 for playa del carmen on that date...?  our wedding will be planned around that, so the timeline is crucial.

valeria mentioned there are no shuttles to and from the hotel, but we can pay $200 for hotel "transportation" from airport both ways.  did any of you or your guests take taxis from the airport?  or set up an online shuttle beforehand?  any problems? cost?

wondering how to go about paying everything?  us or mexican currency?  i'm assuming you pay for the wedding stuff once down there... do they take credit cards?  what about the activities outside of the resort... ziplining, taxis, etc... what currency did you use?  if you don't mind me asking, just because i'm so clueless on this issue, how much american $ and how much mexican $ did you have with you/ did you need for your trip?

brides who have been:  any recommendations on reception areas outside?  we would like to not pay for extra lighting if possible.  know of any area that will be lit at night?

thank you SO much brides!

hello alianne,

Im clueless about Secrets maroma location but I can hel you answering all the other questions :)

definately sunset in july is around 6:30 - 7:00 pm

you can pay thew wedding expenses at the Hotel front desk with credit or debit card.

for other activities, taxis I suggest to judt keep your us dollars, but make sure to bring enough small bills. otherwise you can just exchange I will say no more than 100 usd, of course pesos will be accepted everywhere.

there are some shuttles/taxis at the airport, you can always hire them in advance (of course the hotel will alsways suggest to use their transportation =)  look for cancunshuttle.com there are lots of good options with reasonable prices.

in july theres of course humidity but is also breezee so you and your guests will be just fine!

happy planning and let me know if you have any questions!

Hi! I have not been to secrets maroma but am getting married there in May.

if any of you got married in mid july... how was the weather??  showers?  was the heat bearable?

I did not get married in July, but I have been to the area. It will be hot and humid and breezy like opp stated. It's mexico and the beach though, so most guests should expect it. It will probably be a little warmer in July, but hopefully your guests can tolerate it. Also, it will likely rain at some point, but probably not all day. When I was there it rained for about 2 hours on about 2-3 days we were there. If I remember correctly, it was early afternoon/morning.

any of you know when the sun will set?  valeria keeps telling me between 5-6, but whenever i look it up online it says 7:30 for playa del carmen on that date...?  our wedding will be planned around that, so the timeline is crucial.

I am also not completely sure, but I think it may be getting pretty dark around 7:30. I would guess around 6:00 or 6:30. I can't remember exactly, I never pay attention to the time when I am on vaca.

valeria mentioned there are no shuttles to and from the hotel, but we can pay $200 for hotel "transportation" from airport both ways.  did any of you or your guests take taxis from the airport?  or set up an online shuttle beforehand?  any problems? cost?

A lot of our guests are using cancunshuttle.com as the previous poster stated. I believe for 2 people it was about $80US round trip from hotel and airport, and that was for a private transfer. They also have a facebook page so you could check them out there. There will be taxis readily available outside of the hotel for anyone who wants to leave the resort as well. We used Colectivos when we were there last time to go to the Tulum ruins and was very affordable and easy. Much less expensive than taxis, but probably not for everyone.

wondering how to go about paying everything?  us or mexican currency?  i'm assuming you pay for the wedding stuff once down there... do they take credit cards?  what about the activities outside of the resort... ziplining, taxis, etc... what currency did you use?  if you don't mind me asking, just because i'm so clueless on this issue, how much american $ and how much mexican $ did you have with you/ did you need for your trip?

US money will be accepted everywhere in cancun/playa area. You may get pesos back in change, but I never have used anything other than US money. Taxis, tour companies, everyone takes american money.

I will say that you need to be sure that your bank/cc company knows that you will be leaving the country and that you will be making purchases (especially the large purchase to pay for your wedding). Also, you will wan to check the terms of your cc company, because they may charge additional fees for you to use it in another country. We use cash for everything like tour guide, taxi, etc.

brides who have been:  any recommendations on reception areas outside?  we would like to not pay for extra lighting if possible.  know of any area that will be lit at night?

Can't help with this, but we are having our reception at the barracuda terrace with no additional lighting.

HI Alianne!  Congrats on your upcoming wedding!  I'm getting married at Secrets in September.  We are using a travel agent for our trip and she arranged our transportation to and from the airport through Olympus Tours.  Since our trip was booked as a package I'm not sure of the cost of the transfer but you can look at their site and book online.  http://www.olympus-tours.com/

We are paying for our hotel and all wedding charges by credit card.

If you haven't already, you should look at the Secrets Maroma Brides thread.  There's a ton of information on that thread if you have the patience and time to read through it.  http://www.bestdestinationwedding.com/t/32238/secrets-maroma-brides/1110#post_1746785

Also, the resort reviews are extremely helpful and a little easier to read. I highly suggest you read at least some of those. Here is the link to the Secrets Maroma reviews:  http://www.bestdestinationwedding.com/products/secrets-maroma-beach-resort

    • I have stayed at Dreams La Romana and Dreams Dominicus.  The two resorts are very different in style and decor. A few comparison points are below and fact sheets are attached for both.   Both resorts are approx 45 minutes from Punta Cana airport, close proximity to Saona Island, Catalina Island and Altos de Chavon. Top championship golf courses in the Caribbean are just minutes away including Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore, The Links and La Estancia – all designed by world-famous Pete Dye. Restaurants are similar at both resorts.  Both offer the Explorers Club for Kids.  Dreams Dominicus  Brand new resort and in 2016 488 rooms (however additional construction was underway) More contemporary style & decor Good beach area Rooms were very nice Preferred Club located in main lobby and adjacent to main pool & beach front Food was good Center plaza area with nighttime entertainment Main lobby is small, but outdoor bar off lobby is nice Dreams La Romana Originally built in 2003 & opened as Dreams La Romana in 2008 756 rooms Recently renovated and new preferred club adults only lounge & pool added  Rooms are more traditional Caribbean decor Grounds are very lush and tropical Good beach area food was good    Dreams Dominicus fact sheet.pdf Dreams La Romana fact sheet.pdf
    • My sister has done it but with the destination wedding, only super close family members and friends came since it was expensive and farther. It was great though.
