Sorry for the late reply!  I haven't been on this site much recently, as I got busy with work and life stuff.  I booked Citlalli Rico of Claudia Photo for photography, and Marvin of Maya Diseno for flowers.  I think we're going to go with a mariachi band during cocktail hour and a DJ during the reception for dancing.  I'm leaning towards DJ Doremixx as he has amazing reviews on here.  Both Marvin and Dj Doremixx have been great in correspondence and they have great reviews on here, although I can't testify first hand as to the quality of their work yet.  

 

Our plan is ceremony on the beach, cocktail hour by the pool, and dinner + dancing under the palapa.  We were thinking about doing the reception outdoors, but decided to go with the palapa just in case it rains - the space will already be decorated and ready to go!

Of course everyone's website says they have the best food in all of Tulum, so again, if anyone has first-hand experience and knows where to find the best taco on the beach road, I'd be hugely appreciative. My second priority is the look and feel of the place. From the website pictures, Ana Y Jose and Las Ranitas look perfect, La Zebra looks a little too brightly colored, Cabanas La Luna looks great if maybe a little too bohemian chic maybe?, and something like Be Tulum, for example, looks much too sleek for my taste.

 

We are planning for 100 to 130 guests, which also rules out some of the smaller, more quaint places.

 

Really I'll welcome just any thoughts or recommendations on wedding dates and venues in Tulum. Thank you!

 

Honestly, I wasn't really impressed with any of the food on the hotel strip.  I ate at Ana y Jose, Cabanas Tulum, Playa Azul, Casa Banana, and Zamas.  While the food was pretty good, it was all priced at mid-to-high end US prices (~$20 entrees), and I just didn't think it was worth it.  If you go into Tulum Pueblo, however, the food gets really cheap.  I highly recommend a place called El Camello for AMAZING fried fish and ceviche at rock bottom prices; that place is constantly packed with locals, so that tells you something!

 

I wouldn't really choose your wedding venue based on food.  Feeding 100-130 guests at the same time is a HUGE challenge for any kitchen, so I think realistically, you'll have to settle for pretty-good-but-not-mind-blowing food. 

 

Ana y Jose has a big palapa that can do a reception for 100+ guests, and I think Las Ranitas does too.  You might also want to check out El Pez.

Hey Jello, do you know if El Camello can fit a large group?  Granted we have more guests than mksymes -- we're expecting 150 -- but we were told that there wasn't any place in town big enough to fit all our guests, even for a cocktail party.  That's one of the reasons we decided to do everything at Las Ranitas.  Las Ranitas actually has two large palapas now, and I think each can fit up to about 200 people.  When we visited they only had the main palapa, but since then they have built another one on a different part of the property, over what used to be the tennis court, I believe.

 

Totally agree that cooking for a large group is always hit or miss, which is why we tried our best to pick dishes that we thought were delicious and hard to over-cook (e.g., conchinita pibil, chiles rellenos).  I hope the dinner is as good as what we tasted, but I'm trying to temper my expecations.

 

As to vendors, we picked Del Sol for photography and DJ Doremixx for our DJ, because of the great reviews, but other than that we are letting Angelina pick all the vendors (flowers, cake, mariachi, violinist, etc.).  I trust her and I'd rather not think about it.  She picked Marvin from Maya Floral for our florist, haven't heard about the others.

I don't think El Camello fits large groups, but we just booked Aguachiles in town for our Thanksgiving dinner (and are doing welcome dinner at Om up the beach from Las Ranitas). Aguachiles can definitely accommodate over 100 people. We love Las Ranitas, but wanted to "save" it for the wedding/reception day. :-)

Tmdavis13, we're working with Planner1 Events (same company used in the photos from Del Sol above) for flowers, extra tables/chairs, and some other decor. We've found Junior really friendly and easy to work with. I've heard great things about Marvin of Maya Floral, too, though!

I'm not sure how many people El Camello can hold, but it's not the kind of place you'd want to do a cocktail party.  Emphasis there is definitely on food over ambiance.  You can look it up on Tripadvisor to see photos.  The fried fish is so amazing though, I still crave it months after my trip to Tulum!

Kate, what.is your wedding date? Mine is June 8. If we're getting married the same weekend, would you be interested in combining flower deliveries, as Marvin charges a flat fee of $100 to Tulum?
