Just as a warning... never let your passport or original documents (birth certificates and such) out of your sight.  If someone needs to copy something, then go with them and watch them do it but never entrust it to a wedding coordinator or other "government official" unless they are your personal friend or family.

yes. that is something you have to be VERY careful about. When I went to mexico in 2009 my mom was very insistant on having all of our "important" things with us at all times, it was a huge pain in the ass lugging a huge beach bag around 24/7 but I'm glad we did. My stepdad had a few to many ceasers over breakfast and ended going back to the room to lay down (we had conjoining rooms with my parents) and he had someone actually come into their room and when they saw that there was someone in there took off. All the lights and whatnot were off and it looked like noone was there until he sat up and said something thinking it was one of us. So who knows if it was someone that worked at the resort or what but it wasnt any of us. It would be nice to know what their plan was to begin with but that just goes to show yoru belongings are not safe out of your sight, even in your room. I personally wouldnt even trust the "safes" they have in the rooms, for starters they arent bolted down or anything so anyone can just up and walk off with them not only that, im assuming you arent the only person that knows the code or has the key to get in. Something to be very weary about....lol

Great advice...never trust anyone you don't know well with your important documents.  Even moreso being away from home.

I advise everyone to check in with the local embassy and ensure that they know that you are there and the instructions you were given.  If I would have called the US embassy in DR, I would have known that our wedding coordinator and judge were corrupt and we could have saved ourselves a lot of trouble.
