Has any asian-american brides included a tea ceremony for their destination wedding?

I'm thinking of including this in my beach wedding in Playa del Carmen.

Hey there, I am Asian, FI is Caucasian.  I discussed this tradition with my mother (since it would've been for her) and she told me to skip it.  I think you should ask your parents what they think.  My mother is not very traditional and said something along the lines of "I don't want you to kneel to me" and "it is unnecessary".  We will be incorporating SOME asian touches to the wedding, possibly having a chinese banquet style engagement dinner at home, but we are foregoing most of the traditional rituals for the wedding.

I have read about brides doing it before and after the ceremony. If you want to change outfits, I would do it before the ceremony, but that would require more time, a location and your fiancé would see you before you walk down the aisle which is the case with tea ceremonies. Doable though. I also noticed a bride do it right before the reception. They just had two chairs and some tea set up and did it right before dinner. I didn't want to take up more of our guests day by adding on another event and my fiancé does not want to see me until I'm walking towards him. Soooo since there are family members on both sides that aren't going to Mexico with us, we will be doing the tea ceremony the week before we leave. This will give our families a chance to get to know each other and be part of the wedding a little bit if they aren't going. We are just going to serve some appies and drinks afterwards. We also had a small engagement party of 150 already lol. No AHR though. Maybe a small BBQ though.

My only suggestion to you is to plan out your entire day with a time line. I shoot 60+ weddings each year and have seen a lot of different ceremonies and events. Its best if you not rushed from doing one thing to the next and leaving some time in there for you to relax. Remember... here in Mexico... things take longer than you expect! :-)

His family is from St. Louis and my family is from Souther California...and we live in Dallas, TX. There is just no way we could do this at home.

 

I think you are right, I may have to do this before the ceremony. Thanks for your help!
