How much luggage did you bring?

I am getting married in Cancun and am planning to honeymoon somewhere like Jamaica....I am wondering how did past brides deal with all the extra's they had to bring for their weddings (thankyous, gifts, cake toppers) and still bring enough stuff for an whole other week abroad AFTER the wedding!?!?  Just went on vacation and prices for luggage and being overweight were insane!  and the limit was only 40lbs! Just want to plan for the future of charges!!

I think this is a challenge that all DW brides face. These are the ways I tried to manage my packing space.

• I tried to choose compact or light weight things. For example, I bought a pretty gift bag (off white with a sparkly swirly design) to use as my "card box" since it weighed next-to-nothing and folds flat. We did not include anything liquid in the OOT bags, since liquids tend to be heavy. We did a donation in lieu of favors. So we tied a rubber awareness bracelet for our cause (Alzheimer's) to card stock with our message printed on it. This was both light and compact.
• We gave our wedding party their gifts before leaving home. We chose to make the shower into the big event for everyone (men, too) who couldn't make it to the destination. (We called it a "wedding" shower instead of a "bridal" shower). This was when we distributed the gifts.
• We bought/rented things from the destination when it made sense. I have read posts from brides on the forum that brought their own chair sashes, bouquets, center pieces, toasting flutes, cake cutters, etc. We didn't bring any of those things with us.
• I just didn't use the items that I thought weren't necessary or easy to bring along. So no cake topper, for example.
• Our family helped. We ended up filling 1 1/2 suitcases with out wedding supplies. My mom and brother checked these as their second pieces of luggage so that my husband and I could use our luggage space for our own things. Then they brought back anything that we did not need for our honeymoon. That stuff ended up fitting into 1 suitcase.

I think that, overall, it IS easier. But there definitely are some different things that DW need to deal with that traditional brides don't.

If you are flying first class you are usually alloted 2 bags per person for no extra charge. I would check the airline and compare if it may be worth bumping to up class and getting those extra couple of bags for free!!

Great advice jmastr05!  I think you're so right when it comes to using the stuff at the resort.  I've seen so many ladies talking about candelabras they're bring and here am I thinking "how many bags are you bringing????"  Either way I'm sure I'll have my share of extra luggage, I hope that I get bumped to first class, if not there's always the wedding party you can pawn off bags to ;-)

If you don't mind my asking how much extra did u pay to rent these things and was ANYTHING included with the actual wedding ?
