Chocolate Brides: To Jump the Broom or Not???

Recommended Posts

i'm thrilled to be an October, 2011 Iberostar Rosehall Beach bride!

now that my big day is fast approaching, i've decided to "jump the broom" and so i've asked my adult daughter to decorate a broom and haul it with her to Jamaica. (oh the things a kid will do for dear ole Mom)

is anyone else "jumping the broom' at their destination wedding?? and if so, what made you decide to do it, are you using a borrowed broom and/or a new one, how are you getting your broom to your destination?  oh and please post pics of your brooms too.

i can't wait to hear from all of you!  THANKS for sharing!! :-) R~

Actually I had thought about it a long time ago and thought I don't know why. If I did get married at home New Orleans I would do it, but haven't really given it much thought ( since we are having a destination wedding) until you brought it up. Now It's on my mind.

Well, after watching the movie "Jumping the Broom", I'm TOTALLY on board with it and can't wait to start a tradition in my family.  I'm the first to incorporate the 'broom' into my wedding ceremony.  I'm hopeful that my two daughters and even my son will continue it into their weddings.  Good luck with your planning!!!  R~

its all good!  no worries... :-)

well, its traditionally done by chocolate brides at the end of the wedding ceremony.  the custom dates back to the 19th century when slaves weren't allowed to marry, in an effort to publicly acknowledge their unions, slave couples would 'jump the broom'...there's been a resurgence of the tradition as many chocolate brides decide to institute the practice in modern day weddings.

btw, there's a new movie out titled "Jumping the Broom"...its a great romantic comedy!  :-)  R~

I think it's a wonderful idea then to incorporated into your wedding - regardless where it is.  I learn new things all the time. Now if I see couples do this someplace, I'll know where it came from and what it stands for. Thanks for sharing :).  I'll def. try to see the movie :)

I haven't heard of that movie but I wanna see it too.. I am not a 'chocolate bride' but I saw a bride doing it on one of the TLC wedding shows, I think it was Four Weddings. Wouldn't the resort you're at be able to get a broom or maybe they already have a broom for this type of ceremony or at least a broom you could decorate? I mean I have heard of girls that went out and bought chair sashes and table runners, lanterns, stuff like that only to find out they already had that stuff at the resort.. so the least you could do is ask? Or even if they have something that you and your wedding party could decorate when you got there. I'm just trying to figure out how to pack a decorated broom into a suitcase, lol

love your thinking Dramatic Annie...my thought was, i could have my oldest daughter hand carry a small decorative broom (they sell them at pier one) but the thought of the hotel having one onsite is a definite possibility...i hadn't thought of that...THANKS!!!  :-)  R~

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
