Is Mexico Safe for a Destination Wedding?

I really wanted to get married in Mexico, but my parents are refusing to go due to safety concerns. There would be young children there as well. They are worried about being kidnappped after leaving the hotel or at the resort. Is this seriously something that should be a concern or should I put my foot down? We have booked in Nassau, but all of us are planning different resorts & thats not what I was wanting..

If you are thinking of Cancun or the Riviera it is extremely safe.  I have been travelling there every year for the past five years and have seen nothing that has given me any concern.  I will be getting married there next year.

So many brides are having their DW in Mexico and it's probably fairly safe in the touristy towns like Cabo San Lucas but I had the same issue. Both mine and my fiance's parents said they would not go to Mexico so we are having our wedding in Hawaii but the carribean is a great option too.

I'm not getting married in Mexico but it was one of our choices, we are getting married in jamaica and people are saying the same thing, they are going to get kidnapped/murdered/something along those lines. I think you have to have common sense when traveling anywhere, includin within the US.  I don't know where you live but I'm from Pittsburgh, which in thelast few years has been multiple times been named on forbes list as americas most livable city...well just this week on the news we had a family of three shot to death and a girl missing, which is happening in every city in America, so I don't know what it is about International travel that freaks people out, I just tell them if yo'ure scared stay home, I will send you pics, because if my wedding was happening here they wouldn't be saying anything about murder/drugs/kidnappings....sorry for the rant I just get so annoyed with that comment

There are several threads about this and basically the idea is that Cancun and Riviera Maya are hundreds of miles (if not actually over 1000 miles) away from the dangerous border towns.  So it is like saying you are not going to visit Nashville, TN because there are murders in New York City. 

 

And like mmcst38 said, there is just as much violence in the US.  I hate to make this reference, but how much more dangerous is leaving your resort in Cancun, Mexico than going to the grocery store in Tuscon, AZ?

 

As long as you keep your eyes open and use common sense (as you would in any American city), then you will be fine.  You need to do what will make you happy for your wedding.  If that means having your wedding in Mexico, then all you can do is try to educate your families.

The resort towns in mexico are just as safe as Nassau.  Have your wedding where you want to have it.

We were just in Cancun in October 2010, the resort we stayed at is behind locked gates, people not staying at that resort are not allowed on it's premises unless a day pass is purchased.  My dad lives in S Texas he will not cross over Mexico in his border town, but he is flying to Cancun.  I

as its already been pointed out, there are quite a few threads on this issue already.  In my opinion its a PERSONAL choice.  If you're too afraid to go and have concerns then don't go...that simple.  I don't think anyone on this forum can (A)make mexico any safer for you, and (B)answer this question on your behalf.

Here's a stat that I heard for Canadians worried about traveling to Mexico, more Canadians were killed in traffic accidents last week than were killed in Mexico last year. Also, there was a Canadian accidentally shot in the midst of a drug war in Mazatlan last month, he is planning to look for a second home in the area,  because he loves it so much. It's all about personal choice, and most of it involves the choices you make while away. Don't be stupid and go to unknown areas or look for trouble. A great rule to follow anywhere!

I went to the Mayan last June with my 2 year old and guess what, she never got kidnapped and we never got murdered, nor did the hundreds of other people at our resort!
