Shipping ALCOHOL to Mexico

Hi! Did anyone ship/bring alcohol to Mexico for their wedding. We would like to serve our favorite wine at the wedding (we've already bought 30 cases of it). We, originally, thought we were going to have to pay a ton to ship it, via UPS/DHL, however, our wedding planner's fiance is going to drive it from California to Cabo for us (he's moving to Cabo at the end of September and our wedding planner has offered to have him take over a bunch of stuff we would have shipped!!!). Anyways, she said there are some taxes involved with taking alcohol (wine) from the US to Mexico and am wondering if any of you all have any experience with this.

you are only allowed to bring 3 lts per person to avoid paying taxes , depending on the origin of the wine will be the tax you will pay.. but at least will be a 15% of duty and you have to show the bills for those bottles... I recommend if you can wait until the wedding ask your family and friends to help bring the bottles with them.

I think we're going to plan on having bridal party and family bring a couple of bottles each. Too much red tape to get it across the border in bulk.

We brought 3 cases down by plane with no problems or taxes. I know that they questioned some of our group, but when they explained that the wine was for a wedding, the customs officials let them through.

I was wondering this as well. My dad can't drink but loves non-alchaholic beer. They hardly have any of that in Mexico except for O'douls which he hates. So can we pack it in our suitcase? How did you guys wrap your wine up and did you have to tell them you had it?

Hi there...thanks so much for the info! How did you pack the wine and did the majority of the wine travel on one plane or did you send it with different family members/friends on multiple flights?

We ordered direct from a winery so the wine was already packed to ship. If you plan to buy from a retailer, I would try to contact a winery and see if they can sell you the packing material that they use. We were members of a bunch of winery wine clubs at the time. They usually ship in special styrofoam or cardboard type packaging that keeps the bottles safe.
