I am doing my own make-up. I have medium to dry skin but that's here in Alberta where it's pretty dry year-round. I am really worried about how my skin will react once I've been in Mexico for a couple of days. Any suggestions or people who have been through the same thing?

Hi there :) I am a makeup artist and I have worked with tons of different brides.  Chances are, your skin wont change THAT much when you go away.  The way that you skin will react on vacation will be similar to how your skin will react in the summer (so now is the time to try out new products, if you haven't already!)...If anything you will be battling a little more oil (not much) and sweat.

For your skin type I'd look for long-wearing semi-matte products that work with your skin NOW...(no shimmer on your complexion....a little on the eyes/lips is ok) and use a good primer for everything..  On the day of, use oil blotting papers and touch up with a tiny bit of translucent powder every so often.  Try not to powder too many times or youll risk looking cakey....

Thank you ladies for all the oily skin tips!!! :) I too have very oily skin and want to have my bridesmaids do my makeup.  Looks like I will be going to sephora and get a trial! :)

I have been debating about makeup as well.  I have vacation all next week so my plan is to go to Sephora for a consultation one day and MAC the next to compare.  My resort uses MAC and it comes with our package but I want to try it out in advance rather than wait for my wedding day.  I have oily skin for the most part but get the occasional dry patch in cold weather.  I need something that will control the oil but not create more problems for the occasional dry skin I may have.  Thanks for all the tips - I will try them out next week and report back what I find!

Thanks so much for the great tips!! I have been using Smashbox Photofinish primer too.

Some advice I was already given at Sephora that may be useful to you (and some notes from me hehe):

  • Make Up For Ever HD foundation is better for oily skin (the formula dries very matte... looked a bit unnatural on me I found)
  • Smashbox HD foundation photographs very well (I ended up buying this and used it during my stagette so I can vouch for this on my combination skin type)
  • Skin primer will help your foundation apply more smoothly and help prevent shine as the day goes by.  This only works if you find a primer suited to your skin type though!  (I've been using Smashbox photofinish primer for years and can say it really does make a difference for me)
  • Eye primer will (in theory) help your eyemakeup last longer and prevent creasing.  (I'm still experimenting with this... so far I've tried Too Faced Shadow Insurance which has helped me a bit but I still dont feel like my eye makeup lasts as long as it could... going to try Urban Decay Primer Potion next as the two of them are the most popular)
  • Use a cream blush rather than a powder blush (i haven't tested any yet so can't offer my opinion... I have tried NARS Illuminator on my cheekbones though and it gives a really great glow!)
  • A setting spray will keep makeup looking fresh throughout the day (I tried out Urban Decay Dew Me a few times and have liked the result... of course, it is winter though and I dont know what this stuff will be like under a hot sun)
  • if you need concealer, use a brightening one (I absolutely love Benefit Erase Paste)

Any suggestions I got for eyeshadow were all over the place depending on who I talked to.  I find Urban Decay to be much more pigmented than MAC though... which means I can wear less of it and still get a great look.  More natural on me, but that could be different on someone else.

Eyeliners - try Urban Decay 24/7 liners or Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes liners.  I personally like the MUFE ones better (last longer on my skin type)

Mascara - I got suggestions all over the place like eyeshadow.  I think as long as you have a waterproof mascara you are happy with, keep using it.

Lots of info, hopefully some of that helps you!  :)

Just another suggestion for those of you doing your own make-up: I used Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch by Clarins as a base and primer before putting on my foundation. It works wonders and smooths fine lines and pores. And it's very lightweight. I've tested out other primers (such as Smashbox Photofinish) and I think it's one of the best on my skin. Also, I used a finishing mist (Josie Maran Argan Primer Mist) which can also be used as a primer, and my make-up stayed on fresh for the entire night. I didn't have to touch up/refresh at all - except for lipstick of course. I personally favor the mist because it feels lighter than the other primers, especially since I had the Clarins base on already.

So if you're looking for some different alternatives, try those two. Word to the wise though: some Sephoras do not carry the Jose Maran Primer Mist. I checked three Sephoras before giving up and asking a friend in another state to get me some and bring to the wedding.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
