I need some honest advice. I am planning on getting married in cancun in may 2009. i went to dreams cancun for a family vacation this may and absolutely fell in love. from the first day there, i knew i wanted to get married in the gazebo. as a little girl i had always imagined myself getting married in my hometown of virginia beach. then, i moved to kentucky three years ago. last year, my mother passed away. now it doesnt feel right to get married in va beach since she isnt there but it doesnt feel right in ky, either. that is why mexico seemed perfect. my one major problem is my FI's mother. she DOES NOT fly. she has never flown but refuses to try. she has told me she will not be mad if we still do a mexico wedding but wishes i could pick a beach within driving distance. the FI says we should do whatever we want. he likes the mexico idea. i know it is my wedding day but how much do i need to consider her wishes. i do not want to start the rest of my life with MIL drama. oh yeah, he is also an only child. help me!!! i need brutally honest advice.

      That's a hard one Tara!

Hmmm... What about having a legal wedding somewhere your FIs mother could attend and have a non-legal ceremony at Dreams inviting just a few friends?

Can you do some sort of ceremony, even if its a vow renewal or symbolic ceremony when you return from Mexico (or even before you leave). I wouldn't change your and your FI dream wedding because of a stubborn FMIL.

My Mom and FMIL gave us fits for marrying in the DR. They say there are so many beautiful beaches closer to home for family that we should have chosen from. We said, sorry, but hopefully people will still come (we're having two AHR's for those who cannot) ... and already we have more people booked before invites have even gone out than we ever thought would come total.

So, believe it or not, your FMIL might come around once she realizes you are going to do it your way. :-)

What about just having an AHR so that FMIL can attend that? If your FI is okay with her not coming then I think that should make it easier, its your wedding day, so you should do whats best for the two of you.

Wowza, talk about pressure!! I agree with the others, maybe you can do the legal stuff at home and have her be a part of it, and have an AHR??

And who knows, maybe she'll change her mind about flying....??!

I agree with some of the other ladies that have already posted. Maybe do a civil ceremony at home at some point before the ceremony so that FMIL feel included, but still have what you've always wanted . . . your dream wedding on the beach.

we have talked about a AHR but she still does not seemed pleased with that. she also told me she was worried there were other people that would be put off by the mexico wedding. i think that our closest friends will be there if finances and timing allow. if i were to entertain her idea of a beach wedding in the states, does anyone know of anything similar to what they offer at most resorts in mexico? i want somewhere beautiful and all inclusive. i want to relax and party with my closest friends for a few days and then marry the love of my life in a beautiful spot. i heard nags head is pretty but it is very small. i want all inclusive and casual elegance. help me!

I think it's going to be tough to find an AI in the States. And don't listen to her about other people being "put off" by the idea of a DW. That's BS in my opinion. We have WAY more people coming than we expected. They are looking at it as a vacation.

That being said, if you want to try to appease her (which I don't think you should have to), I would check out some places in FL, perhaps the Keys?

Daufuskie Island, off Hilton Head Island in SC is absolutely breathtaking, but it's not AI, although it is an island you get to by boat, which makes it cool. I think it's pretty pricey though.

We are spending the night there for NY Eve this year, and one night's about all we can afford...

I just checked the rates for next May (although I know your date is 2009) and its like $189/night ... so actually not so bad after all. Definitely check out the website!

How about Florida? There is a Club Med there (all inclusive) I'm not sure how pricey it would be for all your guests. But it is on a beach kind of close to Mexico...lol
