Mexico Danger-wedding cancelation PLEASE HELP

I'm glad to hear you had such a wonderful wedding.  I too am experiencing similiar things.  My fiance's father is refusing to come.  People are backing out because of the price and the "dangers."  I've traveled to Mexico numerous times and have always felt safe. It's hard convincing others though, especially ones that have never left their home states.

Good for you for sticking to your plans!  My fiance and I love Cancun and planned to get married there too.  We put a down payment on a wedding package at the Gran Caribe in January for our November wedding, even though some of our guest were unsure and skeptical about travelling to Mexico.  We kept reassuring people that Cancun is safe everytime bad press came out about Mexico.  Then, this one horible story came out.  It involved a woman from our home town who travelled to Playa Del Carmen with her fiance.  She alleged that Mexican police arrested them and rapped her multiple times while they beat her fiance.  I was horified when I briefly heard the story on the radio, but after reading the details of this story, my fiance and I thought the whole thing sounded sketchy.  However, the damage was done.  People thought I was nuts to go there.  Some friends and family didn't want to go.  We ended up cancelling the wedding in Cancun and booked a date at the Dreams Palm Beach Punta Cana DR.  It did take a lot of stress off of us, but there's no place quite like Cancun.  Part of me wishes we had not cancelled.

What I shame Roxy, this kind of things happen everywhere and I am sure it was nor true as I live here, red news everyday, don't you think if this was true american goverment would have done a huge break news of this? I rememeber when some USA TV show productor killed her wife in the moon palace, they USA goverment where all the time over mexicans authorities until they end up fining out the guy was guilty.

For thoes of you having drama with guests backing out due to the dangers that they hear and see in the news, give them the phone number to the US embassy in Cancun. That way they can call them selves and speak to some one there and ease there mind up of what ever insecureties they might have.  US embassy is not going to lie to its citizens.  This helped ease the mind of my guests that attended.  Hope that helps.

I have my wedding planned in Cancun for April 2011. When we sent out our invites, we unfortunatly got alot of negative feedback from our friends & family because "Mexico is dangerous". Out of 60 people, we have 14 booked, and majority of the ones not going, are the people that fear we are putting their lives in danger. First it was a toss up between Jamaica & Mexico, and before we were dead set on Cancun, about 40 of the 60 people were definatly going. My future MIL litteraly had a panic attack in my house when we told her that we narrowed it down to Cancun and she had to leave our house. My future sister in law, I was told she was running her mouth about it, so I talked to her about it and let her know my intake on Cancun, and before we knew it, she will not let my fiance's own brother go. Its a shame how people react, grouping parts of Mexico into one lump. Yes, it is another country, but I have been to the Bahamas and seen the bad bad parts there. I have been trying to tell people that the US has ties with Mexico, and because we border it, they plaster everything on CNN. BUT, there is a difference between Juarez, Mexico City, and Tiawanna, and Cancun. And there is a major mileage difference too! Its sorta like saying that Philadelphia is dangerous, so don't go to Texas? I did alot of research on the crime rates in Cancun, and it is typical, I guess I shouldn't say typical, but, basically, don't get wasted and wonder where you dont know where you are going. And it seems to spike during spring break with muggings & rapes, which makes sense because majority of the tourists are drunk 24/7!  Cancun relies on their tourism, they are going to make it as safe as possible! New Orleans is very dangerous, but the US never puts travel advisories out about not going to mardi gras! Things happen everywhere, you just got to use your head. And don't do anything that will end you up in one of Mexico's jails! it is aggravating. Planning a wedding is supposed to be a happy time, and why people can't keep their comments to themselves is beyond me. We feel like we learned alot about the people we know planning our wedding. The people that should, and could afford to go, aren't because of the news, and the people that we didn't expect to go and we didn't think could afford it, are doing everything they possibly can to go. We had contimplated changing destinations (especially after my MIL had her panic attack about it) but, we figured, those who want to be there for us will. And when we get back with all our photos, and our guests brag about how much fun they had, all those who didn't go because of their hestitations will be jealous!

In all of my travels I was the most uncomfortable with the people in Jamaica.. We have the same issue and my future DIL was in tears the other night because some in her family were upset that they were getting married in Mexico even through they were supportive at first have known for 9 months and have the money to go.. WTF.. I told her its your day and in the end whoever end up going you will not be disappointed. Only those that see the pictures afterwards will regret their decisions! Both sets of parents are going and sisters and brothers!

I had the same problem! Future MIL and FIL threw a fit, and said they wern't going. But we stood our ground, and they are now going, and are excited about it. What all you ladies have been saying about it is right, the crime is on the border towns, there have been issues with MX since forever! and don't go off the beaten path, that's the same advice you would get in freaking Italy! There is crime everywhere, but the MX govt does a lot of hard work to make sure their tourism isn't affected by negative press. So we shall see what the future holds..........

Let me tell you from experience you will know what family members really support you and who your TRUE friends are.  The people who you really care about will do their best to be there for you and they wont hang the dangers of Mexico over your head. I can say one thing from my own experience, many people will be green with envy afterwards, HA
