Legal Wedding Before Destination Wedding... =(

Aww Nat that sounds so nice and personal.  How exactly will that work?

So we'll have a judge, and a Reverend, and our own vows, and it will be legal, and we'll get everything we want! Who knew?!

Linds, this was all our WC's idea! Basically, we'll do the bloodwork when we arrive, send all the paperwork required beforehand, then on the day of, we'll have our symbolic ceremony (what I view as the actual marriage!), and then the judge will say a few words (in Spanish), we'll sign the paperwork, and we'll be husband and wife! Then we'll have to get everything translated when we get back, which is super-easy (according to our friends who got married legally in Tulum earlier this year).

Okay.... I'm trying to make sense of this as well!  We're planning to have a friend get ordained and perform our "symbolic" ceremony at Dreams in PV.  We'll get the marriage liscense before we go, and then can our officiant sign the papers at our wedding in mexico and drop it off at the county clerk after we get back?  Does the court need to know (or will they find out) that we said our vows out of the country???

I'd rather not say our vows before we leave.... so tricky!

We wanted to do something like this as well for our Punta Cana wedding, but the fine print on the court webiste (may be different in Illinois) said that the marriage license has to be obtained in the county where the ceremony is to be performed. Because there are going to be legal documents showing we are out of the country on that date (ie passports) I wouldn't ever want there to be a reason why my marriage license could be invalidated. Once we're married we plan on having joint health insurance, filing taxes together, etc. and I wouldn't want to put anything important like that in jeopardy. I was also thinking of having a friend who isn't attending the wedding perform the ceremony here and then mail the signed license in to the courthouse to arrive the day we have our "symbolic ceremony" in Punta Cana in order to be married the day we're married. However, after speaking to an independent minister here, I found out that the day you sign your documents is the date they put on your marriage license, therefore the date you're officially married. All in all, we're just going to do everything at the courthouse, let the judge know about our symbolic ceremony at our destination wedding, and see if we can just sign papers and make that whole part as uneventful and cost effective as possible. We'll still celebrate our anniversary on the date of our destination wedding. At the end of the day, the marriage certificate is only a piece of paper that no one really looks at anyway (after you've changed your name with the Social Security office, of course) Good luck!

We had our legal ceremony today :)  It was absolutely wonderful and couldn't be more perfect.  There was lots of laughs and the commissioner was amazing!!!  She took so many photos for us and set everything up for the back ground.  It was just my FI, our two witnesses and me.  We still haven't told anyone who is coming to Cuba in 2 weeks.  Both of our parents are out of the country so regardless they wouldn't have been able to attend.

We are getting legally married before we go to Cancun too.  We just want our parents and siblings there for the legal wedding.  Our feeling is that our big day to always remember will be the DW.  We want our families there for the legal wedding because it is the official unity of us but we know the DW will absolutely be a dream!  For those who can't make it to Cancun, we are hoping to have a very informal reception when we get back and we can share the video with everyone because that ceremony will symbolize our love.  At the end of the day, we have to remember that our wedding days are what we want and we can't always please everyone.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
