If it's for financial reasons,  I get it.  Other than that, why not wait one more year.  Some people won't care and some people will...it just depends on how you feel waiting a full year until the ceremony and reception.

It is for financial reasons actually. And since my first post we have further discussed it and we may wait until toward the end of the year. But I will keep you all updated.

Do you guys not have common-law there?  We've been together 9 years and living together for 6 so for tax purposes we're considered married.  Maybe you could ask a few of your guests what they'd think of the idea.  A few years ago my cousin and his wife had a town hall wedding with the plan that they'd have a big wedding a year later and a lot of people felt 'well what's the point, you've already been married a year'

No Lyndsay_h we do not have common law marriage in Virginia- so that would not work. Believe me we have already considered this! We have talked to a few of our guests and they have stated that they would still come- guess they love us that much!

Ohh that seems so strange!  I got screwed when we filed a joint tax return...Here the gov't gives $ quarterly to people who don't make a lot but FI makes way more than me and they decided I'm no longer poor and wanted the money back :P

But if it makes things easier for you guys and the guests don't mind then why not!

Lyndsay H! The same thing happened to me. I was so sad when they wanted the money back- plus interest. It was something my accountant didn't flag when we compared joint versus single filing. Oh well.

No moment like today.  Get married and dont tell anyone, let them be surprised at your "vow renual" the following year!

In the end it is really about you and your H2B.

                      Good luck deciding
