Is Cancun too trashy? Guests making me feel like crap...

Recommended Posts

Ok so I have everything booked @ The Royal in Cancun and now I have a few guests who are making me second guess things. My wedding will now be in May (no spring breakers), and while I know Cancun itself is known for its trashy clubs, we assume there will be few instances of guests going off site since our resort is a fabulous all-inclusive.

They have made comments about how trashy Cancun is and how they wouldn't pick there to go on their own vacations but that "I guess that's what you wanted.."

And it is making me nervous. I've never been there but please, provide any feedback you can to this. It is upsetting :(

really?! how annoying.

Remember this is your wedding and try not to listen to what everyone else is saying. It is not up to your guests where you should get married.

Sure Cancun is a "party" town, but really only if you choose to seek that out. ,something tells me that the guests of the Royal are not your average "spring breaker" type of people. Don't second guess yourself, stick to your guns on this.

You guys chose the location for a reason, try to remember those reasons and don't listen to others. If it is too "trashy" for them, well then maybe they shouldn't attend!

I was just there (marrried 7.23.10 at RIU Palce Las Americas), and I have been to Cancun 3 times in the last 4 years, I have also been to Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Cozumel....Cancun is the best by far, the best resorts and beaches.  Believe me the people that choose to come to your wediing will be RAVING about the place. My coworker was married at the Royal 2 years ago, and she said she has never been anywhere more beautiful, she went to Domincan Republic for her anniversary and said she wished she would have simply returned to Cancun.

We heard many of the same comments from our guests, especially about their wanting to make a vacation out of attending the wedding.  My daughter was married south of Cancun at the Fairmont Mayakoba, and our guests were very happy with the resort.  They told us they would have picked the location for their own vacations, and some said they were coming back!  Two bought time shares in the area (!). and many stayed beyond the days that included the wedding events.

The Fairmont development is a bit isolated, but our guests seemed to enjoy that feature.  The food was fabulous, the beach and pools were lovely, and the eco-firendly grounds were gorgeous.  A taxi into Playa del Carmen was less than $20, and several of our guests spent at least one evening there, although most were quite happy spending their time at the Fairmont.  The services offered by the Fairmont's events office allowed us to avoid the cost of a wedding planner or travel agency, and we contracted with local vendors for the decor, ceremony and entertainment.  Let me know if you want for info.

A good reason for selecting the Riviera Maya for a wedding site is that flights into Cancun are generally inexpensive, and flight times are reasonable from just about anywhere in the US.  Don't be put off by online room rates as your guests will receive a reduced block rate as attendees for your wedding.  Contact the events offices at the resorts you like and see what you can negotiate, including extending the rate beyond the usual day before to night after package.  A good place for searching various locations is under the hotel reviews on tripadvisor.com.  Search your city/region, and there is usually a live map that will show you the locations for the resorts reviewed on the site.  These won't be wedding reviews, but you can learn more about the resorts.

awww it makes me so sad to hear that people would call cancun trashy!!  I've been to Cancun 3 times in the past 3 years and i LOVE IT!! the resorts are amazing, the different colors of the water, the beaches, i could go on and on and on.  like steph said...you will always have someone complaining about something.  but i can assure you that when FI and I got engaged, we immediately knew that we'd get married in cancun..it's an amazing place and you won't be dissapointed!!

The Royal Cancun would make your local Sheraton/ Westin even local Fairmont chateau with super old decor and small rooms looks trashy!

People always find smth to complaint, it is your day, so it is your call!

The Fairmont Mayakoba is ranked #1 in the region!  The Royal Cancun and PDC got top luxury resorts awards in 2010.  You can even have a bottle of Petrus 1986 at the Royal Playacar by Occidental.

WOW, I can't believe anyone would say that!!!  trashiness is dictated by the people. A couple could have a trashy wedding in Beverly Hills!  Maybe your guests are projecting their own fears about themselves!! bunny_4.gif  Don't let them get you down.  Make them eat their words when they're wowed by what a great experience your wedding will be.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
