What is the difference between the two? I guess I am just wondering which one gets the bigger discounts and what are the pros/cons

A trunk sale is all dresses by one designer. I think that they are often sold at a discount because they are trying to sell off their older stock.

A sample sale can be one or many designers and is held by the bridal salon. They are selling the dresses that they have had in the salon - the ones people try on. These are usually size 8s and 10s.

Thanks Kashmira! I was actually just reading through the "show us your dress post" to get dress ideas and I read through your whole story with the ML dress. How stressful! Long story short, I love your dress and wish I could afford it. It looked so beautiful on you :)

Priscilla of Boston is having a trunk show this weekend, and I am trying to decide whether its worh going. I am not "in love" with any of their dresses, but I hate to miss out on a bargain...

They sometimes do trunk shows at the beginning of a season as well to showcase a designers new dresses, and usually they feature styles/dresses that the store doesn't usually carry. I got my dress at a Ramona Keveza trunk show and was able to get them to basically make me a dress because I picked separates and RK put them together into one dress for me.

Hmm, I should probably post a pic of it now that I have some of me in it.

Oh, I almost forgot to say that I think a sample sale would be the better price, but then again you have to take into account the wear and tear a sample dress goes through. I did get a discount at the trunk show though, maybe 15-20%, can't remember exactly how much now.

I bought my dress at a sample sale. Barney’s has a huge sale on all of their Vera Wang dress (that are samples) and sells them 75% off! It was great! Although girls were lined up and you really need to know what you want because dresses are flying every where. Trunk shows I don’t think offer as good as a discount as sample sales. I could be wrong though.

As most of the ladies have explained the best deal will come from a SAMPLE sale. It's a wedding salon's way of making room for the next season's collection. As Kash mentioned sometimes it's limited in size but definately worth the trip. Expect to potentially have to clean the dress which can add $100-$200 to the price if taken to a pricier cleaners.

A TRUNK sale will showcase just one designer but you do have the ability to change a particular design ( i.e. adjust neckline, lengthen train etc.). Sometimes you can even meet the designer or member of the design team. If you've been eyeing a dress in a magazine but the salon doesn't carry it a trunk show by that brand will have it.

Good luck! I've purchased from a sample sale and received a great deal!!!!

My dress is a sample, and it was over 50% off the original price. They are cleaning it and replacing any missing crystals, which was all included in my alterations price! I didn't go to any trunk shows, but if you can find a sample you love, you will probably get a great deal!

Thanks for your kind words! I guess the lesson to learn is "do not try on a dress if you cannot afford it!"

I think it's worth going to the sale if you like her styles and are ok with her prices (I can't remember what they are but they're not budget for sure). You may love something and be able to get it at a discount! or you might just decide what styles look good on you or the other way around! Good luck!

Thanks for the help ladies... a friend actually introduced me to a store called Vows in Boston. It's a bridal discount place that has a website (bridepower.com)... so anyway, I walked in and fell in love with the whole place! They had every name brand on the planet, and I think I may have fallen in love with a Reem Acra dress.. oh, and did I mention its marked down to $500 from $4500?!?!?! I am pretty excited about the whole thing :)

They are super nice and with a $100 deposit, are holding it for me for 5 days until I get back from Mexico... imagine this is "the" dress! I can't wait to come back and try it a second time :)
