The Ten Worst Wedding Reception Songs Of All Time

I saw Susan's post earlier in regards to "songs to get everyone dancing" so I thought this would be kinda funny and appropriate too cheesy.gif

ENJOY!

Wedding Crushers — Ten Car Train

It’s wedding season, which means it’s also wedding reception season. I’ve only been to a handful of wedding’s recently, but there always seems to be a level of awkwardness at most receptions that’s only heightened by the musical choices at the after party. When a friend told me that she was recently at a wedding reception, where Nine Inch Nails “Closer” was played toward the end of the night I knew we needed a list of the ten worst wedding reception songs of all-time.

10) The J Geils Band, “Love Stinks”– I’m starting the list off with two wedding reception movie classics. Adam Sandler’s performance in this scene has forever left me paranoid that I’m going to wind up sitting with the mutants at table nine. If I ever have a wedding reception I’m totally seating the freakiest people there.

9) Bonnie Tyler, “Total Eclipse of the Heart”– My favorite comedy ever totally ruined “Total Eclipse of the Heart” as a wedding reception song. Well, for most people. I’m going to try to get The Dan Band for my reception, but I also want to have fountains of tequila and half the music played to be Pearl Jam covers. Yeah, I don’t think I’ll be wedding planning any time soon.

Ludacris, “Area Codes”– Something about reading your “whorescope” and eating “whorederves” may not go over real well at a reception. This cut is especially bad if the groom travels a lot for work. Although, if Shawn Kemp ever got married I think there’s no way the couldn’t play this in honor of his many children across the country.

7) The Police, “Every Breath You Take”– So maybe no one would really play “Area Codes” at a wedding reception, but a lot of people make the mistake of spinning “Every Breath You Take.” When you really listen to the lyrics it’s clear that this cut is not about a healthy relationship. Turns out it’s about the Cold War and all the stalking and spying that went on in the good old days. I don’t think that’s really what a new couple wants to base their relationship around, but that’s just me.

6) Billy Ray Cyrus, “Achy Breaky Heart”– I’ve never been to the south so I don’t know if there’s a possibility that line dancing could break out at a wedding reception, but the last wedding I went to had a conga line, which freaked me out enough to include “Achy Breaky Heart” on this list. Line dancing scares the hell out of me, especially if it’s done by a bunch of people hopped up after a wedding.

5) Justin Timberlake, “Sexy Back”– Come on, that is so 2006 wedding reception. I’m gonna go kick my own ass because “Sexy Back” is going to be stuck in my head for the next six weeks. Take ‘em to number four.

4) Pearl Jam, “Betterman”– I think most people would have enough common sense not to include “Betterman” on their reception set list, but then I think of my ex-girlfriend who once called me her “Betterman” as what she thought was a compliment. I don’t really know how she misinterpreted, “She lies and says she’s in love with him/ Can’t find a better man,” but she was an optimist, I guess.

3) Sisqo, “The Thong Song”– I’m not saying playing “The Thong Song” couldn’t lead to an interesting, even enjoyable close to the evening, but I think most couples might like to keep it a little classier than this. Whatever happened to Sisqo anyway? He was all over the MTV Beach House for like three years it seemed like, and then all of a sudden nobody wanted to show him a thong anymore.

2) Flight of the Conchords, “If You’re into It”– I couldn’t make a list without including Flight of the Conchords at this point in my life. It’s consumed me. This is a beautiful song, but I’m not sure double teaming is a topic that should be breached on the wedding night.

1) Europe, “The Final Countdown”– Simply put, “The Final Countdown” is the answer to 93 percent of all worst songs lists. It’s a scientific fact, and there’s not much I can do about it. I mean think about the verse, “Were leaving together/ But still its farewell/ And maybe well come back/ To earth, who can tell?/ I guess there is no one to blame/ Were leaving ground/ Will things ever be the same again?” in a wedding context. It’s just not working for me.

That's a great list! I do have to admit, however, that there was a little JT playing at my reception Saturday night. And of course the song can't play without my husband asking someone if they have their receipt, because he's bringing sexy back!!!! :)

I was going to put the chicken dance as number one for sure. That and is it the Electric slide? "Slide to the right, slide to the left, everybody clap your hands" whatever that one is... that should be number 2 under the chicken dance.

Being in the industry I hear the bad songs far to often. I have to admit though, I love JT so I'd take that one of the list for now. Maybe 5 years from now I might be sick of it, but for now I say keep JT spinning.

Alright, I am a die hard Pearl Jam fan, so betterman might be played at my wedding. It will not be our first dance song or anything, cause of its meaning, but its still a good song. I get why its on the list, cause it should not be associated with a wedding, but I don't care, its my wedding and I will play it if I want to. bunny_4.gif

I agree with the rest of the songs though, in my mind, they are all terrible songs. I am not a JT fan though, but how could I be and be a die hard Pearl Jam fan. rockon.gif

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
