Family Freaking out- Legal vs Symbolic?

Recommended Posts

Thanks everyone...at least I know I'm not going crazy here. smile105.gif

I think we will just go ahead with our plans to go to the JOP the day before we leave for Mexico, not broadcast that the Mexican wedding is "symbolic" but if asked will tell the truth.

It's kind of silly when you think about it, if we were to do it "legal" in Mexico, it wouldn't be legal in the US until we did all the paperwork here anyway, so either way you are "illegal" for a time, so to speak.

Gotta love the family, huh?

Anyway, thanks so much, I feel a lot better after seeing what you all had to say!

About 95% of the guests that went to our wedding still don't know it wasn't "legal." But honestly, your mom is that upset about a peice of paper? It's not like you guys are having a symbolic wedding with no intent on making it legal. I'd seriously ask her that- so marriage is a peice of paper to you? I'm curious how she'd respond.

ETA- oh and for symbolic weddings you still sign a certificate and have your witnesses sign. No one knows it's not legally binding!

  • 1 year later...

thanks for starting this thread. my future mother in law had a meltdown about how no one is going to show up cause its not a "real wedding" ..

i dont think she understands that trying to plan a wedding in mexico is quite difficult with the costs of everything. and how you have to be there so long before they will marry you...

maybe we will just say we are doing it legally there to get everyone to shutup. its definitely hurtful..

but ONE QUESTION -- some resorts and their wedding packages say that a priest, ect cost more money then what the actual package of the wedding costs.. is this true with the symbolic wedding package or only with the civil one?? and who does your ceremony if it doesnt cost more money? im lost on that part..

any feed back would be great thanks

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
