Breaking the news about the DW

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this has already been posted, but i made a search and nothing came up.

I'm interested in knowing how you ladies told or plan on telling your family and friends that you and your FI are going to have a destination wedding. Was it in a special way or on a special occasion? Or do you plan on sending them the surprise STDS and invites? Feel free to post any details of your plans that you feel comfortable telling. If you already notified your family and friends, then what were their reactions?

My FI and I plan on telling our family and friends at our engagement party. We won't really tell them outright from the getgo though. It'll be kind of like a game. The engagment cake is going to be modeled after an open luggage with clothes sticking out, with a luggage tag and a world map/globe. The favors will be mini closed luggage. We won't say anything at first and we'll be waiting until people start asking questions about them, and then finally we'll break the news that our wedding will be abroad. And our clue as to where the destination wedding will be lies within the luggage favors. They'll be stuffed with candy of the Italian flag (green, white, and red) and they'll have to guess where we'll be going. I think a lot of people will think Mexico at first, but I'm sure some will guess it right.

This is actually something we're turning into a party game. You know how bridal and baby showers have prize winning games? Well, the first one to guess our wedding destination wins.

Of course, a few select people close to us already know beforehand because I know they would want to know before everyone else and they're a part of the bridal party. But, they've sworn to secrecy until after the party.

Just wanted to add, our engagement party will involve no gift-giving to us like showers would, we're just throwing it out of celebration.

If anyone wants to see an example of the cake we're ordering(but a little smaller and with some personal modifications), here is the link:

Hopefully, the cake comes out just the way we want it to.

I'd love to hear all your stories and plans =]

We knew almost immediately that we were going to have a DW, so as people found out and were congratulating us and asking the inevitable "have you picked a date" question, we would tell them " it will be somewhere warm and sunny". Once we picked a date and location, we sent out the STDs to make it official.

Your idea for a party sounds really fun!

Similar to what jerseykitten said, we just started telling everyone when they would congratulate us on the engagement and started asking questions about where and when. I'm from Chicago and FI is from MI, so people started asking about location right away since they were wondering if it would be here or MI. And I would just tell them neither!! It will be on a beach somewhere warm and tropical :)

The party idea is really cute tho!

We knew we wanted a DW from the beginning and most of our family members did as well, so when we got engaged we just said hope you're ready for Mexico. I didn't really see a need to do it in a formal way, we just told people as we told them of our engagement.

I have always told my family I wanted to get married on a beach somewhere in the caribbean so it was no shock to them that I wanted a destination wedding, I think it was a little hard for them to swallow at first becuase they thought it was going to be some overly priced event, but Ive always made it know even before we got engaged that I wanted a destination wedding....and by the way I LOVE that cake!

We just told our them during visits we made. Everyone was so excited. We decided that we were going to make it big celebration. As well as celebrating our wedding, we will be celebrating a 10th, 15th, and 40th wedding anniversary, along with a 40th, 50th and 65th birthday of our guests. Everyone has been so supportive.

We decided by default. Our guest list was over 230 people and I'm from Long Island= NOT CHEAP. So once we decided, we called our bridal party (even though we havent officially asked a lot of them yet) and told them we wanted them to be the first to know- and pulled a "Hey, we're all going to Mexico!" type thing. (My dream, absolute DREAM is to get married in Italy but we obv wouldn't be having many people if we did that. This way we are still having a big wedding. Don't mind if I want to live vicariously through you during this time lol) And then we slowly started telling other friends and finally posted it on Facebook, which, as you know, tells the world. :) Your idea is SO much fun!!! :)))

We sat down with my parents first and then his and talked it out with them. We really wanted a DW, but didn't want it to tear people apart or turn our wedding into a nightmare. Our parents were all really supportive and helped us spread the news to our extended families. A lot of people really loved the idea. I told my friends and some of them said they were so excited and others said they didn't think they could swing it. We got the news out to almost everyone before sending the STDs. We will have almost everyone we care about having there and for those who can't make it, they'll see pictures. Hey, there are people who can't make it when it's at home too...

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
