We will gladly have family who can't make it over for dinner, but we arent throwing another freakin reception. my one aunt who is throwing my shower (she told me she was, not asked if i wanted her to) is not coming to our wedding because she claims they cant afford to, yet they are finishing their basement to turn it into a luxurious $40K SECOND family room, when both of their kids are grown and not living at home. she repeatedly annoys me with emails about my shower which is at the end of june -- HELLO it is JANUARY! and my 80 year old grandmother is racist so the fact that im marrying a mexican is not going over well with her, and apparently she told all my cousins that anyone who voted for barack obama for president was getting cut out of her will. WTF. keep your money grams, i dont need that OR your old school backwards negativity.

i just have to let it roll off my back, but it's hard. i never knew how horrible people in my family were until i got engaged!

This is exactly how I feel. We were contemplating on having an AHR for the people that couldn't come, but the truth of the matter is everyone that REALLY matters had booked and is coming to the wedding, so we decided not to have the AHR. I do have a few co-workers that are close to me ,like my big brothers, so I may have a BBQ for 4th of July & invite them over and show them pics & stuff. But that's as far as it goes.

I can't believe your grandma made that comment about who to vote for. The last I checked, your vote was a private matter. You can just say you voted for anyone she pleases. It's not like she's going to find out ...LOL

I totally understand what you are talking about.. what really bugs me is my BF got married in Jamacia... we did not attend because she didn't want us too.. no biggy... but she wanted ehr Bach. party in Las Vegas.. mind you i live in IL and the flight alone to vegas is expensive..t hen she wanted a AHR in SoCal. so i bought another plan ticket to Cal and drove to Socal... i spent over 1000 on her weddign and my other girls did her shower ans stuff and spent around 2000 and they are complaining over 600 for an all inclusive trip! WTF... it really pisses me off!

then i get well now that your paying for it why don't you just get married at home.. my neighbor can marry you.. eww no!

Okay thats off my chest.. i even changed my restort to accom. people and they are still complaining and may not stay there.. it is the Royal Decameron.. nobody on here gets married there.. probably becasue there are sooo many other pretty placese to get married but i stayed here for my guest.. booooo

My great aunt told me it's dangerous in Jamaica. Then she preceded to tell me they went to Aruba once and didn't like it. I really couldn't help but laugh.

I love her to death so I'm not going to worry about it. I know she has a few health problems too and probably just doesn't want to venture off. No problem, mon...I knew this would happen with a DW but I'm still glad were doing it. Of course, there are a few people that can't make it that we really want, due to job, pregnancy, etc... but we know it'll still be awesome!!!

I get so annoyed when people act like your wedding doesn't matter because it is not a "real" wedding. Drives me crazy! My wedding is just as important as anyone else's. I am just going away to get married because 1). I/We don't want a big wedding 2). I don't want a big hassle, seating arrangements, centerpieces, etc. 3). I/We love to travel and love the tropics!
SO take your idea and stuff it!

We are getting the same thing. Everyone has a comment. Both of our families are Jamaican, so people aren't really complaining about the trip....yet. Mostly everyone wants to stay elsewhere (well, we are staying at aunt/uncle so and so's place. or at other resorts..) while not realizing that I have to pay PER PERSON if they stay someplace else. I was trying to get away from the per person issue. No one wants to chip in money for their day pass and now the newest load of crap is...
            wait for it....

So, since your wedding is at 2 and the reception wont start until 6:30, we are gonna have a family dinner at another restaurant and then come back later... Ummm.... how will it be a family dinner without us, and WHY WOULD YOU GO TO DINNER BEFORE I HAVE TO PAY FOR YOU TO EAT DINNER JUST HOURS LATER!!! ARRRGGGGHHH!!!

              wow, that sucks! LOL.

You probably picked Jamaica because you are from there, but I can see how that can cause problems.

OMG I'd want to kill them!! I'm getting married at 2 also, but I just decided to have my reception early (3:30 pm) so it will all be over by 6:30 or 7. Then they can do whatever they want the rest of the evening. I also figured it would hold costs down for my bar tab since people are less likely to get plastered in the late afternoon. (Now I could be wrong about this!)

The only person who really gave me hassle was my grandma. And her comments usually were about money...

"You know, you'd get more money if you married here at home".

After ignoring her with the smile and nod about 3 times I finally replied with:

"You know grandma, we're getting married because we love each other, not because we want people to give us money. "

That shut her up... for about 30 seconds. This is why I'm glad she didn't/couldn't come to the actual wedding - some people just don't get it... still debating if we should invite her to the AHR, haha.

Its very frusterating hearing other people's comments about your wedding. At a certain point I was just ready to chuck it all in and go to city hall and have it over with. But you have to keep in mind that people are not as excited about your wedding as you are. To them its an inconvinience, a "must attend" or whatever. For those that feel that they "must attend" it becomes very expensive and they bitch. I had to tell my FIL that attendance was welcome but by means necessary.

At the end of the day, my only suggestion is shorten your engagement it will lessen the amount of time people have to complain to you
