Is it ok NOT to do invitations?

Recommended Posts

I will be sending STD magnets soon here but I was just going to send save the dates out and then put the website on the save the date. I don't think it's tacky whatsever. We are having an at home reception summer of 2015, so I will send invites out for that and even then, I will most likely just have another website and send invites out to the older crowd.

I think it's totally fine not to send formal invites if you don't want to! Especially if you do STD, and have a website or travel agent send info, no need if you don't want it! I did printed invitations because I wanted to, but only sent them to people once they started to book and were confirmed. They weren't anything fancy, just a postcard invite, but I wanted to send something since we didn't do STD, and I knew family and friends would want it for a keepsake. And me too!

I think it would be totally fine.  I'm currently looking up options and they both seem to contain the same information so I personally don't see the point in sending the same information twice, but that's just me.  I think you should do whatever you feel comfortable doing and what you have budgeted for.

I actually have the opposite question.  Is it okay to not send a save the date and just send a formal invitation?

I LOVE your idea of sending save the date magnets!  That's so cute, not tacky at all.

Yup @@diadiamond totally ok not to send STD! There are no rules! We didn't send STD, just invite once people started to book. We planned the wedding in 9 months, so we were short on time and our invite went out right away. If we had been engaged longer then I probably would have sent STD, but no point in doing both, they would have been sent back to back and would have been redundant anyway.

I really wanted to do invitations, but in order to get the best deal for our guests for the trip we only had a short window in which to put down deposits. I was pretty embarrassed at first calling everyone and asking if they wanted travel info before the invites went out, but my friends and family seemed totally fine with it. Huge relief! I was worried I was making a huge faux pas.

totally normal! we ran into the same thing.

we ended up sending our STDs via email, and then followed with a formal invitation closer to the date. we used the formal invite as a reminder that final payment was due, they needed to book flights, and we needed to capture entree choice for the reception dinner. Plus - I really, really wanted paper invites - that was important to me.

but there are no rules on a destination wedding. it's a completely different ballgame, if you want it to be!

@@AllieH Well it's nice to know I'm not the only one :)  I really want paper invites as well, and I love your idea about how to incorporate it after our friends and family have been formally invited.

I'm not sending invites in the mail.  Doing an email.  We're using a travel agent so that is everyone's RSVP.  So far, it's worked out okay.

We sent STD emails and a link to our wedding website last May since we had a short window to book rooms at the resort. By the time, we sent the paper formal invitations the resort had almost sold out of rooms so the invitation was more of a keepsake/ announcement. I'm glad I sent the formal invitations by regular mail since I have a few older relatives who don't do email. They did not believe I was getting married until they saw the 'real' invitation! LOL!!
