Small beach weddings... and expectations

Recommended Posts

I agree with everyone else -- it is your wedding! When I first came on this site, I read what the other brides wrote about "People will not want to come, they will make excuses etc"...but it never really hit until it started happening. Don't take it personally, even when it's hard -- just look out for you both and keep your chin up!

We aren't registering anywhere either, or having parties or anything. We wanted something lowkey, and as I am not close with my extended family, I told them we were inviting immediate family only - and it was fine.

When is your wedding?

That sounds selfish to me, this is your day and you should be able to do what ever you want. I wouldn't worry about it you can't please everyone, people still like to complain. If they really want to be there they would make the extra effort.

I feel the same way- My wedding is just parents, siblings (and their dates), and maybe grandparents. We dont want the typical 'wedidng' stuff either, thats the whole point of going away- less stress and more intimate.

Anyone have any parents that are very un-interested in anything to do with your wedding?? b/c thats the problem I have- and I am working to get past it and not be upset, because I cant force them to want to be involved. It just kinda hurts

I sort of feel that way. Although they are not totally disinterested but just not really helpful. I have to specifically ask them to do something and overall just feel like I'm on my own with the wedding planning...

Sorry that people are making hurtful comments and being selfish toward your decision. I have found, not from my experience (but I bet it is coming soon), but my sister's, that people are truly hurt when they are left out, because, I believe it makes them feel like they don't mean that much to you because they weren't invited to your wedding. Ultimately, it comes down to what makes you happy, what kind of wedding you want, and of course, what you can afford.

You have taken the time to explain why you are having the kind of wedding you are having, you have extended invites to all you want to come. There really isn't anything else that you can do. People need to understand that this is your wedding and you and your FI will do it the way you want to.

On the flip side, has anyone offered to pay for a wedding stateside? Or to pay for the invites so that it can be more formal? I would be surprised if they have. Everyone is quick to offer their opinion but not open up their pockets. Have your small beach wedding cause that is what you want and what will make you happy. It is a difficult thing to have people being upset with you, but hey, LET THEM PICK A NUMBER AND GET IN LINE...

    • we ended up using Facebook messenger when we were in Mexico - the hotel had free wifi and at least 1 person from each family/couple had FB on their phone already - it was pretty easy to communicate among guests "hey, we're heading to the beach bbq for lunch." or "everyone is hanging at the small pool today".  a plus was that some people tried to get a hold of me via FB on the day of the wedding and I was totally not checking my phone - they were asking if the wedding was outside given the rain forecast, thankful my mom, MOH and a few other friends were on the group and could respond for me :)

    • Hi Everyone, So, I was cleaning out my closet and realized that I never sold off my extra wedding OOT bag stuff from our wonderful DW.   46 Daily Spanish for Dummies 30 Pool colored OOT fabric bags - approximately 13in x 13in. They lay flat.  I used them for our wedding and they were perfect for everything we needed to fit in each bag. There’s a slight shade variation in the group; I’m guessing some were cut from a different bolt of fabric.  They are also a little wrinkled from storage and will probably be wrinkled from shipping. I have three additional ones, but they somehow got something on them (likely toddler related). If needed, I can try to wash it out and send those as well.
    • I’m getting married in six months to my foreign girlfriend. I was advised by a friend that one of the things I need to do before saying I do is to get a prenuptial agreement. Basically it’s supposed to protect my assets and properties in case my relationship with my future wife goes down the drain. I don’t know though if this is an acceptable practice when marrying Kiev ladies. I don’t want to do it if it would be insulting on her end. I need advice on this. Please help me.
