April 2011 Brides

We had smores over the weekend, and thinks that's why I got the idea.

Lua, it's fine not to have favors. It sounds like you are already having quite the celebration. You don't need more to add to your stress factor.

Since it's a brunch it might be sugar overload, but I'm going to put out take away boxes if people want to bring some home for later. I like the fluffy, messy buttercream look so that's what we're doing. Rather than get a wedding cake place to do it I'm just getting them made by a kick ass little bakery in Oakville, Then I'm going to get some sugar cupcake toppers on etsy and put them on myself.

I'm also using pillow boxes filled with candy as the placecards with each person's name on it. Hubby and I are sugar fanatics so it's turning out to be part of the theme!

For decor I went to Value Village and loaded up on mason jars and found this awesome blue vintage tea set I'm going to put flowers in to decorate the guest book table. I also found candle hlders and vintage plates that I'm going to make funky cake stands out of. For centerpieces I'm going to put the pinwheels from the DW in the mason jars, put rustic painted pails out filled with hydrangea (I'm ordering in bulk online and just sticking the flowers in the buckets myself) and then puting out little bud vases with one white peony in each. I'm really excited about the vintage garden vibe that's shaping up!!!

Questions to throw out there:

Are you doing a guest book for the AHR?

Is it tacky to put out a card box for guests? I didn't for the DW and the result was everyone just carrying around their cards all night!

Your reception sounds wonderful! I love all the details that you have thought of!

NOTHING has been done yet or even talked about in terms of how we're going to decorate the hall... if we're going to get a cake... etc.. Crazy!!! lol

We did buy a new bed on the weekend though with some wedding $$$$ :) so that finally begins our master bedroom makeover. I think I'd like to get one of our wedding shots printed in black and white to go above the bed once we paint and such.

Doing the same thing with our wedding money too!

p.s. I think I may be crazy!!!!  I've been searching like MAD to try and find a last minute deal to go back to the Riu Negril for a week in July!!!!! LOL .. i'm so stressed over this AHR i just want to go back the two of us and relax on an actual honeymoon!!!!!  .... too bad the last minute deal would still cost us $2600!! yikes :S

How long is that last minute deal for?  (Days)  That it's that bad of a price!  Does it include airfare?  Then it could be a little expensive if not....

What do you ladies think of smores for our AHR favors? I was thinking of making strawberry and chocolate marshmallows and then packaging them with graham crackers, chocolate and directions. I want something affordable and cute, but also different.

LOVE the idea of smores!!!  I have a recipe for frozen smores!!

LOL  it's an 'option', but as bad as it sounds, we're waiting to see how much we have $-wise after our AHR on saturday.  We really were thinking of re-doing our kitchen this summer if we had enough $, so i think that will be first on the list.  However, maybe.. just maybe we'll have enough for another trip too?? ;) a girl can dream right??

I love the idea of smores!!!!

is it bad that we're not doing favours at our AHR????  we're trying to keep is away from being an actual 'reception' but more of just a big meal.. we're not having a dj or anything.. hopefully people aren't peeved that we don't have favours for them. At least there will be a TON of food!

I think after the whole AHR deal, you DESERVE to go back!!!!

I don't think it's bad that you are not doing AHR, Laura, you didn't even plan on having a big AHR, so really... it's not that big of a deal, I don't think...  Are you doing desserts at all?

I forgot to mention...  We were having such a situation with finding a (reasonably priced) DJ or a better way for our iPod.  Well, hubby talked to our neighbors who do karaoking once a month at a place near by so he asked if they might allow us to use their equipment.  Well, they came back with a better offer!!!  They offered, as our wedding gift, to do the DJing for free, and bring along their karaoking equipment in case we wanted to do that too!!!  SO excited!!!!  They said we can still do our own play list if we want, and just set it up on their computer!!!  YAY!!!!

I know, I'm pretty excited about it!!  I mean, 6 hours of *free* dj-ing?!  It was the only thing we really had hanging in limbo as to what we'd do!!  Now I can focus on fun stuff like figuring out exactly how I want the candy buffet!!

OH there will be desserts galore!! lol

We're doing a cupcake table that will be covered in dark chocolate devils food cupcakes frosted in turquoise and white vanilla butterream (to carry our turquoise colour into the AHR).  My mom so graciously volunteered to make the cupcakes this week so they'll be ready for me to frost Saturday morning with my vanilla buttercream.  I got a pretty kick ass turquoise stand from Home Sense last week that will be the 'main' cupcake stand and I've also gotten 2 different cake stands from the moms then 2 stainless platters (found at value village) so we'll have the cupcakes displayed on all different levels. Oh and my mom is making the cakes in silver papers.  ... can you tell I'm excited about this part of the AHR?? lol  my mom also thought candy would be a cute touch so we got an equal amount of every blue candy we could find at Bulk Barn lol.  My mom already has a nice big clear jar, so we're going to put all the candy in the one jar.  I found turquoise tongs at the dollar store for people to use to get the candy out.  My mom also got some white peppermints and chocolate covered cranberries that will also be on the cupcake table. LOL she's having a ball getting all of this stuff.

And that's not it... there will also be an actual dessert table covered in various bite sized polish desserts. Not sure what they all are, but i know cheesecake is included so i'm happy. ;)

As for the rest of the menu, we have...

garden salad

steamed baby carrots

mixed veggies (broccoli/cauliflower and i think more carrots)

roasted potatoes

pierogi

cabbage rolls

pork kabobs

chicken breast

All made by little Polish grandmas lol.

honestly there's not going to be any lack of food at this thing. We'll be rolling our guests out at the end of the night.

on another note, we're not getting a dj or doing a dance or anything, but do plan to have music playing throughout the night via our laptop.  I started working on the playlist last night but am having trouble with getting songs???  I only have 3.3hrs worth so far (need at least 5 i think)..  anyway, I have been using frostwire, but like 85% of the songs i want, I can't find or the files just have the voice saying "blah blah this file is illegal" .....

what have you ladies been using to get music??  i'd rather not spend more $ lol

    • Unfortunately, pregnancy yoga training is a time of extreme. It's all part of the deal; even the stress is often a normal effect of the hormones that are raging through your system. But you have to keep stress at a controlled level because you have to think of your health and that of your baby. Here are some tips on how to keep stress at bay during pregnancy: 1. Evaluate your activities. Pregnancy is a time of many changes; your body is changing and your life is also about to change. You are transitioning to becoming a new mother. While you're at it, it's high time to change your activities as well. Evaluate your activities by checking your schedule. Perhaps you lived quite a busy life before. That can be pretty stressful and may even put your pregnancy at risk, so it would be best to slow things down a bit now that you're pregnant. Pregnancy has its way of affecting your mood and making you feel tired all the time, so there will be times when you just won't be productive. So instead of piling up on tasks, choose activities that you can drop or delegate to someone else. 2. Break the bad habits. Whether you really were trying to get pregnant or pregnancy crept up on you, somewhere along the way you will face the need to break your bad habits. What are these notorious bad habits you definitely have to say goodbye to during your pregnancy? · Smoking · Alcohol consumption · Too much coffee or any other beverage that contains caffeine One good way of breaking bad habits, even ones that you've had for years, is subliminal programming. Subliminal programming means re-training the mind; it works in two steps: · Removing negative embedded factors in the subconscious Since this method communicates directly with the subconscious, which is responsible for directing our actions and behaviors, it is more effective than consciously deciding to stop smoking or drinking. 3. Take up meditation. If you haven't tried it before, now is the best time to take up meditation. There are many tips and instructions online as well as many books on the subject. You can learn it on your own or join a meditation class. Meditation is the art of emptying the mind to relax both the mind and the body. It is also very effective in regulating emotions, which can be hard to control when you're pregnant. If you have plenty of time to spare, join a yoga class. 4. Block the horror stories. Every woman who's been pregnant loves telling her pregnancy stories to non-pregnant or newly pregnant women. It's their way of saying "welcome to the club." While good advice is particularly helpful, most women tend to share horror stories, or stories of how stressful and emotional pregnancy was for them. You may also use subliminal messages to train your mind to block these negative stories, so you can focus on the positive things about your pregnancy. There are many positive things, too, the biggest of which is the new life inside you, so you won't run out of good thoughts to nurture in your mind.   Safe and Easy Workouts to Do During Your Pregnancy The main rule of thumb when exercising while pregnant is to modify your workouts to suit the trimester you are in and to honor what is happening to your body. What is deemed appropriate for your first trimester is certainly not for your third trimester. However, there are several exercises that you can perform right through to the end. Let's examine the first trimester. You are just beginning your nine-month journey. You may be feeling a bit more tired, perhaps queazy, but you may not even be showing a baby bump yet. At this time, if you have already had a workout program in place, you can continue with what you've been doing.  Some doctors may not advise any lying down exercises at any time during your pregnancy, but speak with your physician to determine if this modification is necessary. Appropriate exercise for the first trimester: • your normal routine (within limits) • walking • swimming • low impact aerobics (keeping heart rate low) • strength training • yoga As you move into your second trimester, you may be feeling a surge of energy but your body is showing the pregnancy more and certain workouts may not feel as good. Around this time, lying down is not totally recommended and keeping heart rate low and core body temperature low is important. The importance of abdominal and pelvic floor strength should be highlighted throughout your pregnancy, so if you haven't already started, Kegal exercises should be implemented in all workouts you do. What is a Kegal? The pelvic floor muscles are like a hammock of muscles located at the base of your torso and under your pelvis. To do a Kegal, simply engage the muscles that you would use to urinate. Keeping these muscles strong may make for an easier birth and less pregnancy related incontinence. Appropriate exercise for the second trimester: • Kegal exercises • pelvic tilts (with head elevated with pillows) • walking • swimming • easy yoga • strength training (lighter weights) As you move into your third trimester, you are now getting to the top of your pregnancy weight which may change the way you stand, how long you can sit, and your sense of balance. Aches and pains from your changing body are probably felt more now. Workouts now become about making you comfortable and making sure you simply maintain what you have. A safe abdominal exercise, which also makes your back feel great, is an all-fours cat stretch and contraction. To do: on a rug or sticky mat, go down onto hands and knees. Keeping back straight, simply pull your abdominals in towards your spine without altering the straight position of your back.. Repeat 10 times. From there, round your back up, like an angry cat, feeling a stretch over your shoulders and spine, then release. Repeat 5 times. Prenatal yoga is great for elevating your mood, may help you sleep better, and decreases pregnancy aches and pains. Just make sure you speak with your doctor first and remember to never start a new program while pregnant. Keeping up with what you're doing is super and will make for an easier birth and a faster recovery.
