Wedding Band Dilemma.... advise please?

Recommended Posts

So, I've been looking forever for a band that will flush with my e-ring. I have found very few (and those that do are pretty $$). What I'd really like is a halfway (diamonds halfway around because eternity is mucho $$) band with channel set princess cuts in platinum (my e-ring is princess and the band is platinum and I want my bands to age similarly). The problem with princess cuts, is that they rise higher than round cuts, so then the band lays higher than my e-ring. I managed to find one finally in platinum, but it was $1900. I don't know if that's designer price or just the price of platinum and diamonds. But then, I went to Jared (where we bought my e-ring) yesterday and found a clearance piece that was actually an eternity band (not just halfway) and platinum for $799! The only problem is that they are round instead of princess and it is a tad loose (you can't size eternities). But I feel for a deal, I could forgo the princess cuts and the size won't matter too much because my e-ring will hold it in place. I'm seriously ready to jump on it, but my question to everyone is.... is it worth it? $799 is still quite a bit, and maybe I'm not as diamond savvy as some of you are. Is this a good price or are you gals finding better for similar styles?

I wouldn't buy an everyday ring that's too big, even for a deal. It will spin around, move, and annoy you because it wont be as comfortable as your engagement ring. I'm having my ring custom made, and my jeweller is sizing between 1/4 sizes! He says that will make a difference in comfort. Have you checked online vendors like Bluenile, James Allen, Whiteflash, Brian Gavin, ...? They have better prices than regular stores.

I feel that you should hold out and find what you really want. This is something you are going to wear forever. An extra $1000 over 50 years is $20 a year. That's how I look at it anyway.

That being said I ended up getting a plain platinum band because my e-ring band is knife edge plat and I wasn't finding anything to sit nicely with it either.

check out bluenile.com. Average jewelery stores (like jared, kays, etc) are having a really hard time being competitive w/ this vendor. If you still can't find excatly what you're looking for, you can always custom make your ring (it's a lot cheaper than you think it is, especially if you get a good local jewler). I would never buy a ring just b/c it's cheap. You're going to wear it for eternity, it better be exactly what you want. And remember, as you go through life, pregnancy, weight gains/losses, and menopause, your ring size will change with you. Do you really want to be stuck with a ring that you'll never be able to size accordingly?

I'm afraid of those online stores because I would have to send in my ring to get it repaired, and I don't even know if they do it for free. Also, I wouldn't be able to try it on. Local stores at least have a lifetime service policy, they will replace the diamonds if need be and I can get them cleaned and polished for life for free), I know a 1,000 isn't much more over time, but I'm losing my job soon, and we will need a house too. maybe I should just go no band! HAHA. I'm thinking along the lines of a plain plat too. Thanks for all those suggestions. I'll look at blue nile again and see the services they offer too.

I would agree with the others about not buying a band that is too large. It will become annoying and given it is a eternity band the diamonds will begin to rub at your skin as the band moves. Have you checked with a logal jewelry store about getting something custom made? It might not be as expensive as you might think.

we got my ering and band at jarods.. my ering diamond is a cushion cut and the diamonds in the ering band and wedding band are round. i don't think that the round diamonds will contrast badly with your princess cut ering. 799 is a STEAL for platinum eternity band BUT you need to have the right size no matter what!! i would go in there and try it on with the ering, take your time and be honest with yourself....is it a little loose or really TOO BIG?? yes its a great deal but this is your wedding band we're talking about so you want to make sure its perfect!! let us know how it goes :)

  • 2 months later...

Alright, so update is needed here. Took the time and went to several jewelry stores. Custom pieces were way out of the ballpark...2,000 for a very thin 3/4 way band in platinum. OUT! Then I tried BlueNile again, but still over 1500 for a not even halfway band. Tried Mr. Jewel on ebay, and actually, for some of you ladies in New York, this might be a nice option. 100% percent positive feedback (i think I saw 1 neutral) and a return policy. He's wholesale and the band I liked was eternity and ideal cut (would come with certificate and if I wanted, I could get an appraisal). Platinum 1 ct shared prong princess was about $1320 and .85 ct channel princess was about the same (both were $995 in gold and had e/f color and vvs/vs clarity. I talked to him over and over on the phone (his name is Issac) and we both decided because of how squirmish I am with online purchases, that I hold off on getting my wedding band there, but if I'm ever in New York, I'll check out his store for a tennis bracelet!!! Anywho, then I tried Bravobride and found a perfect band, but the girl never responded back. So, went to Jared again tonight (over two months later), and the band was still there. And seriously, it's a tad loose, but fits real nice and flushes with my band. I would never get a band solely because it's cheap (btw, $799 is a bargain, but by no means cheap in my book). I am a perfectionist and want it to look perfect or close too, and that's why I would get the band. But, the fact that it's a nice deal does sway me. So I tried it on again today, and I really felt that it is my band. I actually am okay that it is a little big because I know my fingers will get bigger (as much as I'd love to stay my current size through my grandma years) and you can't size an eternity channel band without compromising its integrity. It's not wobbly, just .5 size bigger than engagement ring. Plus, it will sit up at the thicker part of my finger too. So we went ahead and bought it today and I am super excited. Another check! Thank you ladies for all your advice and reading my novel! LOL

Carolina, you are absolutely right, I took a long time and looked at it, I would go back every other week and drive the staff nuts I'm sure. After two months of hemming and hawing, i feel I have made the right decision and took my time and didn't just impulse buy. I will post pics soon!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
