Travelling with a wedding dress

Recommended Posts

I'm getting married at the Grand Oasis Marien in April and my fiance is worried about her wedding dress arriving wrinkled. How have you prevented it being crushed? Should we have it pressed before we leave? The resort isn't able to do it at their laundry. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated, especially by my fiance! Thanks! :-)

I packed mine in a 22" rolling carry on. It was over the top wrinkled when we got there. I had hoped I could just hang it for a few days and it would be fine, but over a couple days no improvements were seen. I ended up emailing my friend who hadn't traveled yet and asked him to pick up a travel streamer at Target. He did and it really maded a huge difference. We steamed my dress, the bridesmaid dresses, groomsmen shirts and pants... and I'm pretty sure a few other things the day of the wedding. It is about the size of a hair dryer.

So depending on what type of fabric, I think that's a pretty easy option.

Honestly i dont know if you can really prevent it from getting wrinkled sad.gif. Depending on the fabric of your dress the more or less wrinkled it will get. You can however ask the FA to see if there is a whole open cabinet where you can lay your dress out in half and if your lucky(i wasn't) and your plane has a coat hanger then try and place it there :)... Also try a HOT shower to steam it out..

A lot of flight attendants did whatever they could to be accommodating towards my dress. It helped that it was obviously a wedding dress I suppose as the garment bag from the bridal shop was pink lol. When there wasn't an open closet to place it in they helped find a storage bin where it would fit nicely over the luggage inside without having to fold it. We got to Maui and it still looked great!

It was pressed before we left. I agree with the other girls though, it may depend on the fabric!

Thanks everyone, this is all very helpful! I think I might have it professionally pressed before we leave, then carry it in the garment bag on the plane and hope for the best! I've already contacted our carrier, they don't have a closet or anything but I hope to be able to lay it out. The thing I'm most concerned about regarding the steamer is that the dress won't dry out - because of the humidity, once its steamed, will it stay damp? Is that a silly concern? BTW, the dress is satin with chiffon overlay - the satin is the part I'm concerned about. Has anyone used a steamer in a damp climate with good (and dry!) results?

I travelled with it in the garment bag. On the plane, they put it in the overhead compartment on top, laying flat. I just hung it up right away once we got there (in the bag) and left it... You should be fine with letting it sit in the steam .... mine was. GOod luck.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm bringing it in a garmet bag as my carry on luggage. I called the airline and they said they do not have coat racks or any place to put it but I'm hoping once I'm on the plane a flight attendant will be able to find a spot for it.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
