Fun stuff for grandma to do in RM

Recommended Posts

I just found out my grandma is planning on going to the wedding! I never thought she'd want to make the trip, but she is excited about it. She said she wants to see the jungle, but doesn't want to walk a lot.

Any ideas for fun stuff my grandma could do? I was wondering if Xcaret would be good. I saw something where you ride a boat down the river. They also have wheelchairs to rent for $15. She doesn't use a wheelchair, but it might help for that day.

Has anyone ever rented a wheelchair at the airport? My parents are thinking that would make the airport & customs easier for her.

Are you talking about just getting the wheelchair for while she's in the airport? Or getting one at the airport and using it the entire trip and returning it to the airport before she leaves?

When my parents (wow, that really ages me and my parents) come to visit me (or used to, anyways), they would tell the airline in advance that they needed a wheelchair at the gate. Usually, when they checked their luggage in, they would notify the airline rep at the desk. When they landed, there would be an airport rep with a wheelchair waiting and they would escort my parents through the airport to the car waiting for them outside.

I think she wants the wheelchair to use in the airport until they finish with customs. She won't need it the rest of the trip. Do they provide that service at the airport for free? Thanks so much for the information!

Then I'm looking for fun things in RM that wouldn't be hard for her to do. I was thinking Xcaret could be nice because she could rent a wheelchair if she needed it.

A girl that I work with just came back from Secrets Capri a few weeks ago.. Here sister is in a wheelchair... She was so mad and actually filed a complaint to get their money back.

She said that they advertise as wheelchair friendly and it is really not at all... Just giving you the heads up.

Another good option for Grandma would be the night show at X-Caret. It looks like a very good show that I have heard nothing but good reviews for. Plenty of seating and you can arrange transport through any of the tour providers.

You could also look into one of the dinner cruises that leaves from Playa Del Carmen for something to do. Most are reasonably priced and a good amount of fun.

Our hotel does night shows that I've heard are pretty good. I saw some clips of them doing chicago, grease & dirty dancing. They also have a casino night that I know she'll enjoy. I'm just trying to figure out a way for her to see the jungle. I read on Xcaret's website that only 60% of the park is wheel chair accesible. Is it actually less than that?

Are there places where you can just pay to take a boat down the river through the jungle?

There is really no river in the Riviera Maya. There is a vast system of caves and underground waterways throughout the whole region though. The river at X Caret is just one small piece of the puzzle.

Another option is a guided boat tour through the mangrove jungle in the Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve. They take you on a boat through the canals in the jungle that were carved from the mangrove by the Mayans. You get to see all types of birds, fish, possibly crocodiles and sometimes even manatees. There is an option to float along with the boat for part of the tour. I can dig up some contact info about that if you want. That would be about the only option for a boat tour of the type that you are looking for.

How about a glass bottom boat ride? Also, my grandmother went to the RM with us this summer and my dad took her out on a kayak so she wouldn't have to paddle. The Tulum ruins were interesting and from what I remember they have ramps for wheelchair access.

Good thread idea. I can think of a few people (and I'm sure there are a few people on everyone's guest list) that aren't interested/physically can't take part in some activities.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
