Odd item to register for???

Recommended Posts

My soon to be husband and I have been living together for almost five years already so we've kind of got the pots, pans and crock pot already... Would it be a terrible idea to register at a local furniture store (where i picked out a couch what.gif we terribly need, ours is over 10 years old). Of course i wouldn't expect anyone to buy us a couch but each person could put a small amount against the total purchase. What do you girls thinkhuh.gif Ingenious or insane??

I think the idea is just fine. We have friends who got married recently and while they did have some of the more comming items on their registry, they also told guests that they were saving for new furniture (they'd also recently bought a condo and just had hand-me-downs) and in the end they got a fair bit of money towards it! Plus, a lot of people will register a honeymoon fund or something so that people can contribute towards that... same idea really.

IMO... if your guests know what their money is going towards, they're a lot happier to give it.

I think it's a great idea! FI family forced us into registering and we wanted to register for furniture too. When we went to the furniture store to ask if we could register they said yes, but since we knew the items were expensive we didn't expect people to buy one a whole item. We wanted to set up a registery so that people's money would be "put into a pot" and then we could put the "pot money" towards a furniture set that we had picked out (figured this would save a lot of people some hassle), but they said we couldn't do that sad.gif. In in the end we decided to register for other items around the house that we needed instead. Goood Luck! I'm curious to know what you figure out.

i love it!!! it's better than getting a bunch of stuff you don't need and you'll just return anyway. we arent registering at all and through word of mouth people know that first, we're not expecting anything b/c they are spending sooo much to come to the wedding but if they do want to give, then we'd rather have money to put towards some nice drapes!!

I think it's a great idea - and like some people said, you can register for the store...not the actual items. So you don't even have to pick out the furniture before hand. You can go after the wedding & pick out what you like, with the consideration of how much money you have to work with. Keep in mind - you will probably piss some people off...some people like giving an actual gift. But hey - they can bite it! lol It's your wedding & you can do as you wish!! cheesy.gif

Nebraska Furniture Mart is here in Omaha and they actually have a gift registry. We had contemplated registering there ourselves. They have the completion program as many others do (Dillards, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc), where you get like 20% off anything on your registry for the 60 days following your wedding. Maybe you could check into that? We knew nobody would by us a sofa, but to use the money we got for our wedding plus the 20% off was very appealing. We ended up registering for enough kitchen/house stuff that we haven't gone and registered for furniture yet.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
