Mr. and Mrs. or Mr. and Dr.?

Recommended Posts

Hey all!

Serious question-

I have worked on my Doctoral degree for the past 7 years. When I introduce myself to others in formal situations, I say "My name is Dr....."

I know when a man has a Doctorate/MD/PhD/etc. and he's married, the newlywed couple is introduced as "Dr. and Mrs...."

Do you think it's appropriate to be introduced as "Mr. and Dr." or "Mr. and Mrs."?

I agree that you worked hard for that title/degree, but this isn't the place to use it. My personal opinion is that this is a social occasion, not a professional occasion - Mr & Dr sounds awkward (in this instance).

According to etiquette, if you're interested, this was the answer:

Since the officiant will be introducing you two as a newly married couple, and not in a professional capacity, "Mr. and Mrs. Robbins" (for example) is more appropriate. If you tend to go by "Dr. Robbins" in most social situations -- if it's on your wedding invitation, for instance -- and really feel more comfortable being addressed as such, then of course you can use "Dr." Just keep in mind that the title is usually used in social situations by medical doctors only.

Hi, I agree with Maureen & JerseyKitten as well. I'm working on my doctorate in nursing so I can empathize with how much your degree means to you, but having said that I don't think it's really appropriate to introduce yourself as Mr & Dr at your wedding. To me it sounds awkward & too formal for your introduction as a newly married couple. Like Maureen said, those who are there will know how hard you've worked for your education & it just seems the wrong place to announce your professional title.

Agreed!!!! You are becoming a "Mrs" you already a Dr. So I would stick with Mr and Mrs. This is your day as a couple not you being a Dr. I understand you worked hard on it but for the big day stick with Mr and Mrs IMO.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
