Need advice: Getting married in US before heading to Mexico...

Recommended Posts

I need your advice and opinions!!

Aaron and I plan to go to the courthouse to get married before we head to Mexico for our symbolic wedding May 10th. We do not really want to get poked for the blood test in Mexico and do not want to mess with all of the translation and legal issues of it.

I had told him that instead of having the boring justice of the peace "ceremony" here, if we could afford it, it would be neat to fly out to Vegas and get married there, just for the fun of it! I love Leigh's "drive-thru" wedding pic and the idea of that or a ceremony in Vegas.

Now for the dilemma:

We are going out there at the end of October. Aaron has to go out there for business for a week and I plan to fly out with a few of his co-worker's wives for a long weekend. Do you think early Nov. would be too early for us to get legally married in the states but have our "wedding" in May? Another aspect of this is if we got married this fall, Aaron be able to include me on his taxes. He gets raped by Uncle Sam every year because his is in a high tax bracket and has no deductions.

He brought it up again today and asked if I thought November would be too early. Do you think it would be wierd to be legally married in Nov but celebrate our anniversay on May 10th?

I am anxious to hear your thoughts :)

Are you telling your guests that you are already married?

I've thought about the Vegas option as well, but we aren't telling our guests that the Symbolic Ceremony isn't the legal one. Our wedding is in April so if we could swing a trip to Vegas in early April, I would totally do it .. but not much earlier than that.

So, for me, November to May would be wwaayy too long to keep it a secret. :-) But, if your guests will know that you've already tied the knot, then why not?

It's kind of funny what you will do for a tax break and good dental insurance, isnt it? We just got married a week and a half ago at the courthouse and my wedding is next May too. I just graduated law school so I have no health insurance plus FI is supporting my unemployed butt untill I pass the bar so he could definitely use the tax break for his "dependent"! bunny_4.gif

At first, we were both worried that it would take away from the actual "wedding day," but we kind of made it more of a fun thing and agreed that it would call it our "marriage day" instead elefant.gif We just spent that weekend celebrating but for the most part we have put it out of our minds. So far so good... I have to admit that I have been super distracted with bar study, so I don't really think about it much (I know, I'm an awful person)...

Oh - we ended up telling our parents and siblings because, well, they are our parents and siblings, but that is... we didn't want it to take away from our mexico wedding plus the jewish grandmas would have a heart attack if they knew we went to city hall (oy vey) smile72.gif

i say do it ... why not!? and if it matters - i wish i had done it before the wedding in mexico rather than after ... doing it after was almost like i was taking away from our wedding - i wanted the fresh memory to be the real ceremony in mexico. that probably makes no sense! but i say do it. or, vegas is pretty easy to get to and they always run weekend specials ... just find a random weekend to go, closer to May

keith just read over my shoulder and said that we should do it....but then i told him that we'd have to fake a mexican wedding AND a nj courthouse wedding b/c we wouldn't tell our parents....which i'd be ok w/ but he's not...

...i say go for it!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
