How soon is too soon?

Recommended Posts

Ok, so just wondering, what was the average time inbetween when you started planning and when your wedding was?

I don't think we'll be getting married until 2012 and I don't know what I can actually start planning yet!! I've got a rough idea as to what I want, layouts of the STD and invites, and I've thought about colors. I feel what with it being two years away still that maybe it's a bit too soon?

I was also wondering when you would get the best deals/quotes for vendors/venues?

IMHO you can start your planning whenever you feel like it! I got engaged in March 2008 but due to finances, could not have the wedding until July 2010. I am the most indescisive person in the world, so I didn't start planning until July 2009 to keep my sanity. The only thing I did beforehand was decide on a resort.

There are so many options out there for details, just do whatever makes you happy. But remember- opinions change a lot in two years!

11 months for me. I couldn't imagine having a long engagement considering we've already been together for almost 10 years! I think you're ideas are a great start. I wouldn't worry about formally sending out STDs yet, maybe just word of mouth regarding plans for a DW.

As for quotes, I found most vendors/venues don't have prices available more than a year before the date. And even resorts can change ownership between now and then so keep browsing and bookmark ones you like so you can have your top 5 ready in about a year.

Like LadyTrunck said, you may find your opinions change over 2 years!

Hello!

Well i got engaged in October of 2008 and am getting married in June 2010. I pretty much decided on the resort right away and sent out my invitations pretty early to give people lots of time to plan if they did in fact want to come to the wedding.

I have the tendency to change my mind a lot, and even though i started to plan right away, a lot has changed from my original ideas of what i thought i wanted.

So take your time, but I would say that if you want to start now go for it. After all it is your day, so you want it to be just right :)

Good to hear I'm not the only one who has so long in between engagement and the actual wedding! I'm just so excited and can't sit still right now! I don't know how I'm going to wait for two years! How did you girls manage it?! Patience is not good!

I also know what you mean about indecisiveness, I'm terrible, I just know I'm going to annoy myself and change everything all the time!

I would start looking at locations and resorts now. That way you can plan a site visit well in advance to decide where you want to be married. The frustrating part is waiting for the new prices to come out, as mentioned above many resorts will not have prices available until 12-15 months prior to the wedding. Good Luck and Happy Planning!

We were engaged February 2009 and we're getting married July 2010 so that's about an engagement period of 1.5 years.

Time flies by so fast. You can at least start to research locations and think about your budget, guestlist( one of the hardest things I had to do),and overall how you want your special day to be.

Good luck!!

I agree! My wedding is almost a year and a half away. I'm not sending out STDs until sometime late spring/summer BUT this leisurely planning I'm doing right now is a LOT of fun without the stress and I figure, by the time I actually need to get working on things, I'll be half done already. :)

I've changed my date/location so many times since we got engaged. We were engaged May 2009, but I didn't "get serious" until just recently.

Once you pick a date, you get this sort of mental timeline. It didn't really hit me that I had to seriously plan a wedding until it was under a year to do so.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
