What I would and wouldn't do again...

Recommended Posts

I haven't done mine yet.  But I have had 7 friends get married in Mexico and 4 did it legally and 3 did a symbolic wedding.  No one regretted their decision and all of them were so happy with their wedding.

None of the couples that did their symbolic ceremony stated they would change a thing.  However 3 out of the 4 couples that did it legally said that although they loved getting married down there, that if they were to do it over again, they would do the legal thing at home and do a symbolic ceremony.  Like I said they didnt regret getting married there, but they all said it was a lot more work and a bit of a hassle.  Blood work and getting the paper work translated along with the licence.  It just cost way more then if they had done it symbolicly.

We are getting married in Canada, 4-7 days prior to leaving for Mexico and then doing a symbolic wedding when we get there.  To all of our guests, this will be a legal wedding, but we will know the truth that its actually only a symbolic one.  To us legal or not legal, the day we say our vows in Mexico, will be our wedding day and will always be our wedding day.  A peice of paper shows its legal, but its what is in your heart that matters.  Thats what I think anyways.  We are making the legal day a very simplistic "nothing special", another day in the week kind of thing and thats it.

Its all in what you make of it and its all in what you truly want.  Some people truly want to be legally married in Mexico or wherever their DW is, to others it doesnt matter.  To each his own right?  What is good for some isnt good for others.  You have to do what you want and not worry about what other people want you to do and also do what your budget dictates too.

Hope that helps!

Talking to my brother, he says the one thing he would not do again was the formality.   When I went to his wedding, it was beautiful and wonderful.   He tells me though, now that I am planning mine, that his was too stuffy and proper.   He's really pushing for a beach wedding for me and I'm leaning towards that direction.   No tuxes and suits for mine.

That's one of the FUN things about a DW.  You can make it as formal or informal as you wish!!!  Ours was traditional but at the same time people were dressed comfortably and we had a blast.

A few things I am learning on here such as the importance of a picture list, really being thoughtful with your invite list and NOT stressing are jumping out at me.  I really appreciate this as I am starting to feel the pressure even though I have a little less than a year to plan.  I want to enjoy this time so this list is very helpful to me!  Thanks ladies!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
