great debates.... platinum vs. gold

Recommended Posts

Hello all :)

Ok, we are about to make the big e-ring purchase here in the next few weeks. I thought I would ask you what your thoughts were on a topic that has been bouncing around in my head for a while now... white gold vs. platinum.

I am a preschool teacher, so my initial thought was platinum...for strength and "ruggedness". My ring is very detailed, pave diamonds and all, and our jeweler, after talking wtih me about my concerns, suggested very strongly the white gold for the e-ring and bands. Of course I LOVED that the jeweler didn't try to upsell us, and genuinely listened to my concerns.

My main concerns: sparkle and pop of the diamonds, and I want the ring to look as good fifty years from now as it does the day he formally purposes :)

Obviously I will do all of the reccomended maintenence as well.

Thanks for your insights ladies!

In case the design of the ring helps, my e-ring will be Mark Schneiders "Cherish" (with a slight modification as we designed with Mark himself).

My ring was offered in platinum and white gold. I hated the way the plat. felt so I chose white gold. My diamonds look beautiful against the color (IMO wink.gif ) I have had it for a year now and there are very few marks/scratches at all. I will probably have it redipped before our wedding just to freshen it up!

go for platinum.i have a white gold e ring and dont get me wrong i love it but my other white gold ring is 3yrs old and has got a tinge of yellow to it.it needs replating which is,nt a problem but you will never have this problem with platinum.

we have had paladium wedding bands which is in between white gold and platinum but it never tarnishes.magic.look into it this may be another option.

hope this helps

I just checked out your e-ring, very pretty!!! I went with white gold, I'd rather spend the $$ on the diamonds than the metal. Then again I'm pretty careful with my jewelry so if you think it will get some abuse go with the platinum. Either way it will be beautiful, congratulations!

Well I know that platinum won't wear down or discolor like wg, so it might be a better choice if you want your ring to stay the same over the years. And if you're looking for rugged, platinum is stronger than wg hands down.

As for showing off the diamonds, I don't think you can do much better than platinum. And it will hold them more securely since it's stronger than wg.

Good luck and congratulations!

Well we had the same issue when we were looking into e-rings. Although platinum is stronger, it tarnishes easier and will need to go in to be polished. They tend to look more worn and less shiney as time passes. My FSIL has a platinum and she has taken it in quite a few times becuase it looses the shine it once had. Now mine is white gold, and i have taken it in to get a quick polish on it while they are cleaning it...no yellow tinge on any of my white gold...although i know many do.

It is truly up to your own preference....but platinum has its issues just as white gold does.

well, my first e ring was platinum, my current ring is white gold. of the two i like the white gold one better. it's got a nicer whiter shine to it. yes it has to be recoated every now and then, but most stores sell you a maintenance program that covers it, and it doesn't take long for the recoating process.

the platium ring went dull pretty quick and wasn't as bright as the white gold. So from my experience i'd go for white gold.

also as far as upkeep goes, i had to get my platinum ring polished ALL THE TIME. my white gold ring, I only get that done when i go in for my 6 month warranty check ups.

Mine is platinum and I love it. Platinum makes the diamonds shine more (per our jeweler and looking at my ring). I kinda uinderstand how people would want to spend more money on the diamonds but how nice will the diamonds look when you see yellow in the white gold? If I am going to do it and have this ring forever I would want the best.

I have a platinum ring and I must admit, I have had it over almost 2 years and I have never taken it to get polished (shame on me!!) all things considered though..it still looks great!! I love the fact that platinum will never get a yellow tinge to it and my diamonds still sparkle as much as they did day one! If you want the best, then go with platinum. It is a heavier metal and withstands a lot more than WG does. I just got my wedding band and I need some serious polishing to make my Ering look as pretty as my new Tiffany band honestly. Overall, personal preference and wear and tear you expect to put on the ring should be the true deciding factor. Good luck

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
