Anyone getting legally hitched before Mexican wedding?

Recommended Posts

we are getting married here because of the legal issues and the uncertianty of getting things done properly in another country. I am also a brusier and if I have a blood test done I will have a large black bruise for at least a week. It just wouldn't be pretty

Thank you all for sharing. We plan to get married before Dec. 31st for tax reasons. His birthday is, on Christmas so we would like to get "married" on this day, but of course nothing is open so we will get married on the Monday before. I might wear a fancy dress or some jeans and sneakers, it just depends on how I feel when I wake up that day, no pressure.

I personally do not think it will take away from our wedding, as we'll treat the courthouse marriage as not the "real thing". Still,I am nervous AND I made the mistake of telling a couple people and they kept saying "dont do that - it will ruin it!" censored.gif

Ok, so plan is to not tell a soul and have everyone believe we are getting married at the ceremony they attend.

Anyone been there done that?

Thanks chicas!
We're planning to go to the courthouse and get married the day before we leave for Mexico. If you get legally married in Mexico you have to be there a certain time before the ceremony which we won't be able to do . We're not planning to tell anyone either, not even our parents. My FI raised a good question though. He asked if we get legally married on one day but have the symbolic ceremony another day, which date is your actual anniversary?

My fiance and I are doing the legal stuff in two weeks even though our wedding isn't until May. He got a new job, and the only way I could continue to live with him is if we were legally wed. We have talked to all of our family and friends about it, and they are all really cool with it. We won't call ourselves married, we won't exchange our rings, and I won't change my name until after we come back from Mexico. This might sound bad, but we are just thinking of it as the piece of paper needed to keep living together (my grandma is happy because now we won't be living in sin anymore, lol). The ceremony in Mexico is what we will consider our wedding date! :)

In Mexico and MANY places they won't do a ceremony without either doing a legal wedding or you can do a symbolic but you have to have proof that you are already married before they will do it. We planned to do a legal in Mexico and ran into a problem with needing 3 business days to do it-- so we went and got legally married already just to get it over with.

It is a matter of personal preference. For some, having a legal ceremony before would take away from the special day. And for others it doesn't. It does seem to take a long time for the marriage certificate to arrive from Mexico, however you really only need it if you plan to change your name right away. It doesn't make you less married to not have it.

For us, the decision was due to the fact that our resort would only conduct legal ceremonies in Spanish and none of our guests speak spanish and we don't either so we just felt we wanted it to be in English.

Also, I am not sure why that person had to actually go to Mexico to get a divorce. Divorces are legislated by your state or province of residence not where you got married. You file papers in your home jurisdiction.

But regardless do whatever makes you most comfortable!

I said I wanted to wait until after but the FI said he thought we should do it before. Thinking about it now if you do it legally before then once you have the symbolic ceremony you can really say you're married as soon as that ceremony is over vs doing the symbolic first and then having to come back to home to finalize everything.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
