For those who are getting married in the US before your DW...

My FI and I are getting married a few weeks before our wedding in Aruba. I totally agree that it is a lot more difficult to get married in Aruba. I’m not changing my name on any documents till after the wedding for two reasons. One, we both agreed that the real wedding isn’t till we get on the beach in Aruba so I won’t change my name till after. Two, I heard that if your name is different on any of your documents it can prevent you from entering the country. I think you really should wait to change anything. Better safe than sorry!

We got "legally" married in April 09, and our wedding is Janaury 2010.

 

It's just the way that worked best for us and i refused to have my beach wedding in "rainy" season!! lol

 

I have officially changed my name on everything but my passport. The only reason i haven't changed that is it's a British passport and i have no idea where to begin that process from the US! But, as long as you travel with your marriage certificate and that your travel documents match your passport your absolutely fine (done it multiple times already).

We are actually getting married in two weeks and our wedding is not until July. We decided to move it up because my fiance has to see a specialist and needs my insurance coverage. Regardless of moving it to this year we were going to get married in the states because it is easier. I didn't want to hand in copies of personal paperwork and then have to pay to have everything translated. We are however, keeping our legal ceremony a secret, so that it doesn't take away from our wedding in Punta Cana.

Why would you not change your social security card? That wouldn't affect your passport, and that's the only thing you need to get on the plane, right? Is there another reason not to do it?

I think I will wait also (because of the first reason you gave) but as for the second, you just need your marriage certificate to prove the name change.

We're thinking of getting married in the US the week before we leave for our DW because it just seems easier. But, we're calling it 'signing the papers' rather than getting married. Our Jewish ceremony will be in Jamaica - and March 6 will be our wedding date - but because we're bringing our Rabbi with us and not being married by a Jamaican minister, I think we're going to sign the papers in the US.

we're signing papers the monday before we leave b/c it's sooo complicated in Mexico with all of the translating paperwork, blood tests, etc. I want it to be quick and simple; I DO NOT want to even say "I do", lol. I am a little scared that it will take away from the wedding, but it'll be just the two of us, and the view of the ocean is much better than the inside of a court house
