Hi Girls! What a wonderful forum. I've been browsing the last few weeks since I got engaged and I really am hoping to have a destination wedding in either Riveria Maya or Tulum...just have to convince, well everyone! They say it's 'our wedding', but the momma's sure do like to lay down the law. Did anyone else have similar problems? What did you say to convince your family that a wedding in Mexico is better than a wedding (very expensive mind you) in Northern CA? They all are flying in from all over the country anyways...why not some fun in the sun?

Can't wait to start planning my wedding with all the helpful information on this site!

Take care,

Leslie

We were married in Tulum this February. Everyone loved it. I am now in the process of planning an anniversary for the entire party again. The MIL definitely complained during the whole planning process, up until the point that I unlocked her hotel room door and she stepped inside. From that point, she still never stopped talking, but at least she was happy.

She had been to Cancun a few times and stayed in the Mayan Riviera Palace and swore that it was the place ever. She'd been to Tulum and was mystified as to why we would get married in such a small town where there weren't even any resorts. Now she swears she will never go back to Cancun.

We just found a place to accomodate all her needs and got her involved in other parts of the planning process (we put her in charge of th AHR). Once she had a job she became manageable.

What can you say to convince that the Tulum is better than something at home? You could send them my slideshow. That seems to convince a lot of people.

Let me know if you need any help. I'm in Tulum frequently and would be happy to answer any questions. In fact, I'm running a scouting trip for a couple other couples Nov. 11-17. You're welcome to join us if you would like.

Hey Leslie.... Congrats... Well we convinced part of the family by telling them the truth it was just to hard to afford a wedding in NYC.... Me and the fiance tried looking for a location in nyc ,but it was just to much, a wedding and finding a home it was just cutting it to close... Then we convinced everyone by saying its an all-inclusive hotel and telling them that its a vacation... But also made it clear that if they couldnt make it, it would be fine.... Some of the immediate family had concerns but we said we would help them financially with the trip if need be.... YOu just have to sell it...LOL That is what we began doing just selling the idea of our wedding LOL... Well have fun and it all will work out... Good Luck with everything..

Hi Leslie - Welcome to the forum! I received some pushback regarding a DW from family as well. After each negative comment, I stressed the positive. It's our day and it's what we wanted. While we hope everyone will be able to make it, we realize not everyone can be there on our special day. I found that if you say that enough and stress what a wonderful adventure it's going to be...they just can't help to get on board. (Cuz if they don't...they'll be left behind.)

Best wishes,

Jen

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
