Trying to restore my mom's wedding dress to wear...any ideas??

Recommended Posts

That's special...I'm actually getting my mom to make my dress and incorporate pieces of her dress in mine....I can't wait!!

As for the discoloration and stains....I'll have to ask my mom if she has any ideas of any sorts for restoring you're dress, do you know what kind of material it's made out of. Depending on what kind of material, lace, silk, ect....you won't be able to use just anything on it.

hey there.....sorry it took so long to get back to you with this....just spoke with my mom and here's what she told me. This can actually work, she did this to restore her friend's lace curtains that had stayed in the basement for years and was full of rusty spots due to water in basement.

Before trying it all over the dress, pick a small spot on the dress that is not noticeable......this way if it doesn't work...no damage done to the whole dress.....

sprinkle baking soda and then use a spray bottle, in the spray bottle put vinegar (just regular kind) clear. it will bubble, with your finger gently rub to make a paste....leave for an hour or two (she said few hours) and then hand wash......

She swears by it. she said that her friends lace curtains are better than new.

IF it does work on the small area you try...once it's all clean have it steam pressed or dry cleaned.....

GOOD LUCK! keep me posted if you decide to try this and if it did work.

When your mom did this, did she do it the stains and the whole curtain? The dress has some stains on it but also will need an overall cleaning. Will this work for the whole dress or is this focusing in on stains? If it is on the stains, does she know of a possible way to just clean the dress or just do the whole dress with this process.

Thanks again for all your help (and your moms)

Shannon

So, I cleaned the dress. We actually used woolite in the washing machine in the gentle cycle. I was so amazed! It actually took out two of the big stains on the front of the dress. We then tried cleaning it with the baking soda and vinegar and then went really brave and tried oxyclean. The dress is actually just about as ivory as the dress was when my mother wore it 35 years ago. There is still one stain on the front, bottom of the dress. It isn't as dark as the others were, but is definitely noticable. We still have to see what we can do about that. Overall, the dress looks amazing! My mother would be so happy we took the chance to clean it ourselves. They were asking $1000 to clean it without the guarantee it would even work. Thank you so much for all the ideas. I think that one stain is just stubborn and I will have to live with it and figure something out.

Thanks again for all the ideas and advice. My mother would be so thrilled to see her dress this way!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
