May 2010 Brides!

Recommended Posts

Hiya girls! So much to catch up on! Welcome to our new May crew :)

*rant alert* I have had a miserable 24 hours. sad.gif Went to get our marriage license yesterday AM and fought on the way. Great start. Then the stupid lady at the marriage bureau bullied me into checking the box that I'm changing my name, which I had already decided I don't want to change it professionally so I was going to keep it til we have kids. So then I'm crying in the bathroom at the marriage bureau b/c I'm so upset at the stupid woman who was condescending, judgmental, rude & totally inappropriate. Then last night one of my professors "yells" at me over email because of some miscommunication that was, in fact, an error on her part. I've never been chastised by email, especially by a professor, and this was particularly scathing - completely inappropriate & unprofessional (which I told her in class today). Then my program director wanted to meet with me (b/c somehow I've been appointed the FNP class rep) at 7 this morning, before our 8 am class, to discuss why too many people are showing up to our clinical site (um, DUH, because you placed too many of us there!!). She didn't show to our meeting and then when she did come, 45 min late, refused to listen to what I had to say. WTF?! I am so sick of dealing with crazy ass under-functioning people. Only 1 more week of this freaking semester. I will make it!

sorry for the raving lunacy. I about lost my mind but I think I may still have 1/2 a cylinder left.

ANYWAY,

Sita - that's great you're getting your masters too! Wow is it a lot of work though. What's your specialty? btw I loved your planning thread! Your dress with the pink crinoline is gorgeous and I love your necklace!

dianep - that's so nice that you'll sell/give your dress to another BDWer! I'm gonna go check out your dress :)

I think the tanning thing is just one of those personal choices. I'm gonna go tanning too which I'm not thrilled about cuz I know how bad it is for your skin, but I also don't want to totally fry myself once I step off the plane. I have gone to mystic tan before & it actually worked really well, but I'm a little worried about doing it before we go b/c we'll be there 5 days before the wedding and I'm afraid it'll start sloughing off & get streaky from the salt water.

Good to know about the Jergen's Amy!

Karen, I hear you, when it rains it pours!! Thank god it's over and have a glass of something. School was out as of last week for me, but not really because I am working on a thesis and I am already like 2 months behind :P. Yes, I have found that some of these profs (probably a woman right?) can be quite snarky when it comes to academia--its like they are on some sort of power trip (come on, for real?!!).

I come from a pediatric specialty and am doing a regular masters in nursing, but I totally admire how you are going the NP route--I so wanted to do that when I was in nursing school but feel like I still don't have enough experience, so will wait on that :). What area do you/would you like to work in?

So sorry you had a rough day Karen. Nursing in general is a "eat your young" profession. I had a professor like that in my MSN courses and she was always being "pissy" when someone would question something she said...like she knew all the answers. Just think 1 more week...you can do it!

Hi girls!

I understand your professor problems very well...

When I was in graduate school I purposely chose a male advisor because the majority of the women in the department were, how can I put this nicely, unstable? One day they were great to work with and talk to, and then another day it was just devil-woman time. OMG, I couldn't take the back and forth. Luckily, all of us students were in the same boat, so we were able to joke about it and know when to stay away from them and hide in our labs :-)

Now I'm on the other side and actually a professor myself. One of my two full-times jobs is to teach Pharmacology to nursing students, and so far I have yet to have one of those "days". Something I've learned is to read and re-read an email before you send it. It's really quite easy to "journal" something (where you just basically throw up your words and how you feel at that moment) and hit the send button because there's no face-to-face contact. I can guarantee you, Karen, that she probably wouldn't have said those very same things to your face. When there's no one there to defend themself, they kind of puff up and get a lot angrier than they normally would. I'm totally NOT defending her, but I do understand how she could write something so ridiculous and let it slip by. I'm glad to hear you told her so!!! That's great!!!!

My FI works for a woman who is diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, and she called him one day to ask a question. He answered her on how to fix it, but it wasn't going to be as easy as she was hoping (meaning, she'd have to wait for something to be delivered) and so she yelled at him like it was his fault and then hung up the phone on him. He told me he went up to her office and called her childish and unprofessional and told her that if she ever wanted him his help again he suggested she act like an adult and be rational. My jaw just about hit the floor!

You're right Karen, you WILL make it! And all of the crap you're putting up with will just melt away VERY soon!!! In less than 5 weeks you'll forget about this drama!!!! The hard part for all of us will be coming back to reality...

Booooo....

But at least it will be fun to wait and see our pictures :-D

Thank you so much girls for all your words of support! It's nice to know you've all been there - misery loves company right?

Sita, yep this was a woman. And I've had a similar experience with a few other professors - some of these academic types are ridiculous. Total power trips. Congrats on finishing this semester!! At least with classes done you can focus more on your thesis. What's the topic?

I really want to work in a private office doing primary care. Before I went into nursing I worked in an internal medicine office as a manager and I really like the continuity of care and relationships you build with your patients.

Our thesis can either be a project/intervention (with paper) or just research paper & we can work in groups of 3, which is nice. We chose to implement an early childhood literacy program at my clinical site (a family practice clinic) that provides each child a book at all of their well-child checks (it's a national US program called Reach Out & Read). It's definitely a challenge, but hopefully we can get this up & running.

Chrissy - your professor sounds like my program director. She's never wrong & knows everything - just ask her. wink.gif I just don't get why this profession is so full of that eat-your-young mentality! It really does a disservice.

Cristini - That's so wonderful that you're a pharm professor! I had 2 really great pharm professors and I soooo appreciate that they really knew their stuff. And I know exactly what you mean about the email thing & I think you're exactly right - there's no way she would've said the same things to my face (or even on the phone). It's really easy to just hit send after typing a rant, but I would expect a little more from a PSYCH professor/practitioner! In class (family therapy) she tried to make excuses that she had had a bad day & realized it was a little harsh & that's when I said I felt it was unprofessional & inappropriate (it all surrounded me asking the TA to make copies of our presentation handout for the class, but only because he had offered to do so and had been making copies all semester for all of the groups. Unfortunately the prof didn't know that so she reacted really badly.) A little thought before hitting send goes a long way.

Wow, having that kind of unstable boss sucks for your FI! Good for him for sticking up for himself! I'm sure that stopped her in her tracks and I hope she did 'grow up'.

Ah well, thanks again girlies! Appreciate the camaraderie!

Now, back to the wedding planning! Have my 2nd fitting today.

Thanks for the advice on spray tan..I am still thinking about it!

Karen, we all have days like that! You should have asked to speak with a supervisor when that lady kept bullying you into changing your name. It was not her business in first place! I guess professors are humans after all because they do mess up but it is not cool when they take it out on the students! I'm glad you took care of it. What is NP? Im trying to figure that out! Hehe.

ooh, right, sorry Di! NP = nurse practitioner

I know, I should've just stuck up for myself, which I'm mad at myself about. I think the woman was trying to be all jovial & light-hearted ("honey" this & "sugar" that) and I'm sure she just doesn't get why anyone would keep their name. After all, in her day you didn't even have the choice, which she kept telling me. Also "it's not rocket science, you just change your name!". Ugh. Whatever. I asked her how long I have to change my name & she said a year - so what, after a year I'll turn into a pumpkin? After a year my maiden name doesn't exist anymore? Who keeps track of that? I really don't get it. I think it's a NY state thing - being required to make the decision now and if you EVER want your name changed later to your spouse's last name you have to get re-married in the NY marriage bureau. I've never heard of this (I was married before in IL & know people in different states that haven't heard of this either).

Karen, it's totally understandable. Sometimes you just don't want to deal with it and go ahead with it. That happened to me too!!

Jenny, yikes, what a bitch/bastard the attorney is!! I truly hope you get the dates moved. Tuesday will be here in no time! WOOT!

i love that just polished sparkle! i'm STILL waiting for my wedding band to come in. my e-ring took 5 weeks for the designer to make, and i think it's been well over 6 weeks now for my band. i left a message at the jeweler last night. i can't wait to go pick it up!

i just posted it the other day in the show us your dress thread, so it shouldn't be too far back. it's a terrible picture, but the only one i have that shows the whole dress. you can't see the detail on the side much, though.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
